My hubby and I are starting to talk about TTC... but I'm kinda in the mood to do a little research. I just moved to Mpls 3 year ago so I'm not very familiar with birthing centers around here. What are the good ones? I live in St Louis Park... so anything Minneaoplis would work. Ones to stay away from? I'm toggling the idea of having a midwife because I have seen my SIL give birth with a MW and I liked the care she got, but I dunno yet. But I don't want to do a home birth like she did. I want a place that will listen to me and let me give birth how I want (which I'm not even sure how yet). Anyway, any input would be great! Thanks
Re: Hospitals with midwives?
well, not really in the minneaplis area, but DH and i are going to mayo clinic in rochester (even though we're in owatonna), and they have midwives, which is what we're using. i'm really happy so far with the care i've received from them (although we also just moved back to MN, so i haven't been seeing them for very long, now. however, from what we've discussed with them so far, it's been great.)
usually at the hospital's website you can check out the staff, see if they have midwives, etc. that's how i decided to go with mayo.
Oh I think I saw that place when I was searching online today... some kind of birth center?
Anyone know anything about Fairview? I saw they have a women's center with midwives. What is the main difference between and obgyn and a midwife?
One of the reasons I chose a midwife is that they will be there during your labor and delivery. My midwife was with me from 7am-5pm when I delivered. She had to catch a flight so another midwife was there with me in the afternoon and through the evening a few hours after I had my daughter. Our midwife literally sat in our room with us for most of the day while I was laboring. Our midwife was exactly what I was looking for in a labor experience and more. I think my husband was kind of worried that he wouldn't be needed in the l& d and that the midwife would take his place but I think she made him feel more included than had she not been there. He's pro-midwives and tells everyone to use one now. :)We went to St. Johns and used Generations Womens Health in Shoreview.

What got me thinking about a midwife is the experience my SIL had. Her first baby was born in a hospital and she did not like the experience at all, she had a doula then. Her second one was a home birth (where she lives in Missouri that is the only option if you go with a midwife) I was there and witness the whole birth.... the midwife was actually late, my brother delievered my niece because the labor happened so quickly. One minute we were ordering food at Ruby Tuesday... which ended up getting ordered to go, then an hour and 25 minutes later the baby was pokin' her head out to see the world... lol. So to speak. But I really liked how her second (and now third - at home as well... midwife was there this time) was born the way she wanted, on her hands and knees, not having to be on her back with people rushing in and out of the room and so forth.
Since it's my first I would like to do it in a hospital or like atmosphere just incase there are complications. And since we have that option up here I think that is best. Now just to find these options
How do you like the FV midwives? You say 'team' do you see one or just all of them? I saw that there was FV Riverside Women's Clinic and University Specialists in Women's Health - both have midwives, but do you know the difference in the two clinics?
as far as i understand it, whether i have an OB or a midwife (though we are going midwife), i can still birth however i want: hands and knees, squatting, leaning, on my side, on my back - whatever works for me. if you have an OB who tells you you can't birth how you want to, it's time to find a new OB (same goes for midwife).
the only exception is if you get an epidural or spinal, it limits your mobility, and they don't want you on your feet/legs/knees (standing or otherwise), as you have little to no control of your lower body. so as long as you plan to go without an epidural, then there's no reason why you can't give birth in whatever position you want.
Hi! Park Nicollet Midwives deliver at Methodist Hospital, which should be in your neighborhood (it is off Excelsior, near 100). So far I have met with most of the midwives in the groups at my regular appointments and I like them all.
Good luck!
I've been going to the midwives at the FV womens clinic and so far, so good. I am due October 18th. They recommend that you rotate between all the midwives for your appts because you don't know who will actually be on call when you go into labor. I haven't had a problem with any of the ones that I have seen so far.
