baby with history or seizures - yay or nay to immunizations?

My 6 week old daughter recently was released from Children's hospital after lengthy investigations on the cause of a seizure she had at 4 weeks. I will be asking my pediactric neurologist about this, but I am curious to know:

has anyone had a child who did NOT receive immunizations because of a previous history of seizure activity?

I know that some shots can have seizures as a rare side effect, and was wondering if having a baby who has a tendency to seizure would preclude getting those shots.

TIA!

Re: baby with history or seizures - yay or nay to immunizations?

  • I am not a big fan of vaccinations but here is what I do, only one at a time. My son has epilepsy and our neurologist made an excellent point at one appt. He said viruses make you more at risk for having a seizure. If your son was to catch a serious disease who knows what would happen seizure wise. Yea. maybe we had a few extra appt. and more copays but it has worked great for us. My kids are up to date but I didn't stress if they were a tad behind esp. since they were not in school.

  • I would also be cautious if I were you. There are many people who delay vaccines and don't start until well after the first 2 years of life, especially if the children don't go to daycare. Even then, you can choose to do only one at a time. You should look up the alternative schedule and educate yourself on it.

There are some vacciness that are completely ridiculous to give to babies, but that's just my opinion. Like the hep C?? Come on, that's a sexually transmitted disease. Give me a break.

But this comes from a mom who chose not to vax her child. Good luck!

  • We are doing delayed/spread out vaccinations....but no DTaP bc of CDC's contraindication for uncontrolled seizures.  If/when his seizures become controlled we will revisit the DTaP.

  • DS' seizures are controlled, and none of his doctors have mentioned not vaccinating or a delayed schedule. His Dx is epilepsy, so I would think that if there were a substantial risk of vax-related seizures, our neuros would have said something.

  • My 1st son ( who is now almost 3) started having apnea spells @ 4 hours old, was taken to the NICU, had a CT scan that showed a swollen brain and an EEG later showed seizure activity at 1 day old. We really do not know the cause except the idea that it was oxygen deprivation during or before my labor. I did not vaccinate him AT ALL until he turned 1, then I did them very slow ( 1 at a time, and he still has not had MMR, chickenpx, or flu). Noah never had any other seizures and is developmentally "normal".

My 2nd son was born healthy and we have been vaccinating him on schedule, just 1 at a time

  • My DS has uncontrolled seizures and has been having them since turning 1 month old.  The seizures are associated with a genetic condition causing brain abnormalities.  He has been vaccinated according to the pedi's reccomended schedule, except for the 2mo delay of the hep B vacc series at birth.  I asked my pedi & neuro about the vaccines after his diagnosis at 2 months old, and neither indicated a need to delay or skip any of the shots.  We have never noticed any increased seizure activity associated with his immunizations, and I personally am glad to know that he is protected from damage from any of these very serious diseases.

  • Thanks so much for all of the input, ladies.  I really appreciate this!  I was already thinking of spreading out her vaccines, but now I will definitely think hard about the issue and discuss it with her neurologist asap as she's almost 2 months old.
