Am I alone in thinking that 20 bucks an hour for one baby is a bit excessive for a baby sitter to charge? When I nannied I made $18 an hour for 3-4 kids and one of them had special needs and was like watching 10 kids all on his own.
20 Bucks an hour makes going out for a night unaffordable. We joined sittercity.com and that seems to be the going rate in our area. I was looking for more like 8-12 bucks an hour depending on experience.

Re: Seriously $20 an hour?
HOLY CRAP.
No, that is WAY too much. I mean, unless they're going to be coming with some pretty awesome references or something. The going rate around here is around $10 an hour. That's insane!

That's not even close to the going rate here in Chicago!! The agencies are charging about $12 an hour (on top of the fee of course) so that's who I take my lead from.
$20 is insane! I'm so glad my mom and MIL are so close and love to babysit...in over 2 years I think we've had to pay a babysitter 4 times, and 2 of those were NYE!!
Thats insane! I think the going rate in the NY/NJ area is about $15 an hour tops...if someone wanted $20 for my one extremely easy 6 month old that would basically sleep the entire time they were babysitting them, I would laugh in their face!
DH and I had the same issue with nannies...the average rate in this area is about $400-$500 a week and one girl who answered my post on sittercity had the nerve to tell me that "thats less than minimum wage (it's not) and she makes $20 an hour" and "I should be really careful about hiring someone who is willing to take that little".
This was coming from a 28 year old with only a high school education and horrendous spelling abilities (this is not meant to be offensive to those who did not go to college, however we were looking for a nanny with a college education) and I honestly wanted to slap the shiiit out of her! She wanted what basically amounted to nearly $1,000 a week to watch one easy baby from 8:30-6:00PM...thats almost as much as my college educated multi degree self makes weekly, lol!
Definitely do not hire a babysitter that wants $20 an hour, thats highway robbery!
