Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Seriously $20 an hour?

Am I alone in thinking that 20 bucks an hour for one baby is a bit excessive for a baby sitter to charge?  When I nannied I made $18 an hour for 3-4 kids and one of them had special needs and was like watching 10 kids all on his own.

20 Bucks an hour makes going out for a night unaffordable.  We joined sittercity.com and that seems to be the going rate in our area.  I was looking for more like 8-12 bucks an hour depending on experience.

Re: Seriously $20 an hour?

  • That's ridiculous. I would never pay someone that much to babysit ONE kid.

    HOLY CRAP.

No, that is WAY too much. I mean, unless they're going to be coming with some pretty awesome references or something. The going rate around here is around $10 an hour. That's insane!

  • 20 for a night out seems like a lot. Now for a nanny I would say reasonable but a casual sitter hellll no!
  • We joined too when I was on bedrest and we needed help. It was insane what they wanted an hour. Have you tried neighbors? We recently hired a neighbor grl to be a mothers helper and she charges me 5 an hour.

  • When I babysat back in the stone age I only got $1/hour per kid.  I'm glad I have family and friends who are nearby and willing to babysit!

  • We found someone on here who is willing to accept $18 an hour, but thats not much better.  I just need someone who can do a few hours here and there so I can catch a movie with Phill and go to Yoda a couple morning a week....wth?  How does anyone afford it?

  • I would laugh in their face...that's way too much.
  • I pay my across the street neighbor $10/hr and I thought that was generous. I would also try care.com. I haven't used but it's been mentioned on here before...

  • We pay our part-time nanny $18/hour for two babies, and we're in a pretty expensive city.
  • that's too much! i pay my babysitter $75 for 2 full days...i drop him off @ 6:30 am and pick him up at 6pm....now thats a bargain
  • $20 an hour?  That is crazy! Do you have any local colleges?  You could try their Career Services offices - that's how I got babysitting jobs when I was in undergrad.

  • I paid $12.50 an hour recently - but the going rate around here is $10 an hour.  I paid more because it was fairly last minute and she drove a good 15 miles to get to my house.

  • Wow! That sounds like a LOT. I don't know what the going rate is around here because we have lots of adult friends with older kids who are dying to cuddle a baby for a few hours. They keep DS for free.

  • Oh, you're not going to like what my sitter charges.  She's a HS freshman who goes to my church and it's $2.50 an hour.  I am giving her more, but I couldn't believe that's all she wanted.  $20 an hour seems insane.  Have you tried local teens you trust?

  • That's not even close to the going rate here in Chicago!!  The agencies are charging about $12 an hour (on top of the fee of course) so that's who I take my lead from.

$20 is insane!  I'm so glad my mom and MIL are so close and love to babysit...in over 2 years I think we've had to pay a babysitter 4 times, and 2 of those were NYE!!

  • The going rate here is $15/hr although we had someone charge us $25/hr (not using her again!)

  • Wow I knew I as lucky but now I really know!  If we want a night out friends will babysit DS for free but we usually give them $20 for the night so they could get pizza or something.  A friend babysits DS while we are at work generally from 730-430 five days a week for $85/week, yay!

  • That's crazy. When I asked around everyone told me $10/hour.
  • Thats insane! I think the going rate in the NY/NJ area is about $15 an hour tops...if someone wanted $20 for my one extremely easy 6 month old that would basically sleep the entire time they were babysitting them, I would laugh in their face!

DH and I had the same issue with nannies...the average rate in this area is about $400-$500 a week and one girl who answered my post on sittercity had the nerve to tell me that "thats less than minimum wage (it's not) and she makes $20 an hour" and "I should be really careful about hiring someone who is willing to take that little".

This was coming from a 28 year old with only a high school education and horrendous spelling abilities (this is not meant to be offensive to those who did not go to college, however we were looking for a nanny with a college education) and I honestly wanted to slap the shiiit out of her! She wanted what basically amounted to nearly $1,000 a week to watch one easy baby from 8:30-6:00PM...thats almost as much as my college educated multi degree self makes weekly, lol!

Definitely do not hire a babysitter that wants $20 an hour, thats highway robbery!
