How about "Mommy and Daddy are eager to start a library and bedtime stories! Please bring your favorite childrens book to help get them started!"
I think that books make some of the best gifts for baby/children. My sister had her shower 2 yrs ago and instead of flowers or candy as a center table piece - my mom and sis's mom in law bought a bunch of books and stacked them up! So cute and so useful!

I think it's weird to dictate presents to a guest. If she wanted books, she could add a bunch to the registry. Either way, people will bring whatever gift they want.
You could buy a bunch of books for her & that could be your present though.

Here is the one I used. I like it because it makes it an option to bring the book and asks the giver to leave a note to the baby in the book to keep forever.
Although cards are nice They're read once or twice A book is a treasure Forever and Forever So if you would like, in lieu of a card for baby and mother, please bring a child?s book with your thoughts in the cover.
Here are a few others I came across when researching this for myself:
I want to be a bright child As smart as I can be. That is why I'm hoping My mommy & daddy will read to me. If you plan to bring a card Please take another look, I would like to learn my ABC's From your favorite storybook. Please sign your name As your personal touch. Baby ______ thanks you So very much.

I tend to be of the opinion that you don't tell the guest what gift to bring. While I understand that you are trying to make it "optional" by saying "please bring a book in lieu of a card" you aren't really making it optional. No one wants to be the one who doesn't bring a book. Also a lot of the nice childrens books are not cheap and I would deduct that from what ever my budget was for the gift in total. I'm a reader so I personally wouldn't get a board book from the dollar spot if I was asked to do this.

Its not dictating if I leave it optional.
But thanks for the ideas.
Here is the one I used. I like it because it makes it an option to bring the book and asks the giver to leave a note to the baby in the book to keep forever.
Although cards are nice
They're read once or twice
A book is a treasure
Forever and Forever
So if you would like, in lieu of a
card for baby and mother,
please bring a child?s book
with your thoughts in the cover.

As smart as I can be.
That is why I'm hoping
My mommy & daddy will read to me.
If you plan to bring a card
Please take another look,
I would like to learn my ABC's
From your favorite storybook.
Please sign your name

From Peter Rabbit to Mother Goose
Good Night Moon and Dr. Seuss
Curious George and Winnie the Pooh
Eloise and Babar, too.
In lieu of a card, please bring
your favorite childhood classic.
Let's build a library for baby ______
that will be fantastic!

Although cards are nice with
Their sentiment and prayer.
They?re read only once or twice
Then tucked away with care.
A book is a treasure,
Words and pictures unite
Read over and over
To teach and delight.
So instead of a card for Baby and mother,
Please give a child?s book
With your thoughts in the cover.
Your book will be cherished,
God will watch from above.
When it?s read they will remember your
Kindness and love.
