My life: Married a year and a half, bought a house last year, work full time.
I am freaking out about: My husband and I want to start trying to have a baby but are worried about money, cost of baby, having money while I have to go on maternity leave, then daycare, all of the above!
Anyone have any good advice for me? We both have great salary jobs, but in order to have a baby I need to keep my full time salary job with a 30-40 minute commute Monday to Friday (8:30 to 5). I believe I can have maternity leave but I am sure is unpaid. Any advice for where to get short term disability or insurnace that covers maternity leave and such? I would love to hear from you that work full time with a newborn, I can't see how its possible. We have no family in town that can help, both families are in Ohio, we are in Chicago. I am anxious to get started, but hubby is worried about money.
Help me!
Re: Newbie and clueless! Introduction.
Check your area's FMLA regulations. Do you have any sick/vacation time you could use to get some income while out with the baby? My BF has a job through the city and they have a down payment program for houses within city limits. Check the fine print of your employee benefits, they may have something like that for you
I have AFLAC that covers some costs and it's affordable $10-12 non taxed from your paycheck.
DHHR in my area has a childcare program that bases the rate of any certified care facility with a sliding scale of your income. I checked some up front cost of newborn care and it's TERRIFYING! My family also lives further away and works during the times I would need wee one looked after, so I'm exploring options as well.
I'm new on here too (and pregnant first timer) some moms on here can be super mean and judgmental but MOST are helpful and kind. I work full time and plan to do so after baby is born. Having 2 incomes is a necessity lately.
Best of luck!

Welcome!
I am new here too. My husband and I have been married for almost a year and will be TTC starting next month.
At my job we don't get paid maternity leave. We can take up to 12 weeks off but have to take it unpaid or use our PTO. We rely so much on my income (my husband works for his family's business so sometimes paychecks aren't consistent) so I can't take it unpaid. I just signed up for short term disability through Aflac. I should have had it anyway in case something else were to happen to me and I needed to take a leave from work. With Aflac you can't file a maternity claim for 10 months after you sign up so that is why we are waiting till next month.
Another thing I did was really take a look at our finances. I never really had myself on a budget. I don't really pay much with cash I usually use credit cards. I pay off my credit cards every month though. When I looked at my finances I saw how much money went to just stuff that is not necessary. I am putting myself on an actual budget and an allowance and using cash more. I am putting way more into savings now than what I was. By the time we have a baby we will have a lot saved up plus we will be used to living on less money so all the regular baby expenses won't be a big deal.
