High-Risk Pregnancy

Just diagnosed with GD and needing help

My mother would always fail the 1 hour test but would pass the 3 hour test during all 4 pregnancies and to this day has some sugar issues, though no diabetes (nor anyone in my family) so I was slightly prepared for this.  I also have PCOS and am overweight so I knew that would increase my odds.  It took over a week to get results and during this time I was trying to eat a good GD diet, but only with direction from online resources and not checking my levels (didn't want to buy it if there was a chance of passing).  I failed all 4 levels (forgot to ask for the numbers) and so my midwife is pretty sure I will need medication to control my fasting one and has opted to refer me out.  I meet with a doctor on Friday and I'm sure he'll arrange for me to meet with a dietician or will have better meal plans for me, but in the mean time, I could use some help!  I don't think I'm doing it really well because instead of getting just a little hungry out of no where I will be starving (2-3 hours after eating) and if I don't eat in the next 30 minutes or so then I feel faint.  Didn't have those problems before the test, just tried to eat good and would eat until full.  I was usually fine with 3 meals and one snack, it's really weird for me to have to eat so frequently.  It just seems like anything recommended isn't actually filling me, especially when I'm trying to be so strict with measuring the servings etc.

Oh, and I need to go to the grocery store.  What are some things that are always great to have on hand?  I really have to up my protein intake.  I'm used to only having one meat (or less) a day and not substituting beans etc. for it.  I've been trying to snack on almonds, cheese and peanut butter but that's already getting old.

Thanks so much ladies!

Re: Just diagnosed with GD and needing help

  • Hi, you'll get lots of help on here.  What I've needed to eat on the diet hasn't been too different than normal, I just need to eat more.  I feel like I'm eating all the time!

The website "Sparkpeople" has been a HUGE help for me.  Before every meal I enter everything I eat into the site and it calculates the nutritional content so I can tell if I need to add more carbs and protein or eat less. It's a free site and if the food that you're planning on eating isn't in their database, you can add it based on the nutritional content label on the package.

Here's a guideline of what I need to eat, which may help you until you see your Dr.

    Breakfast: 45 g carbs, 7 g protein

    Snack: 15 g carbs, 7 g protein

    Lunch: 60 g carbs, 21 g protein

    Snack: 15 g carbs, 7 g protein

    Dinner: 75 g carbs, 28 g protein

    Snack: 15 g carbs, 7 g protein

The literature my dietician gave me (I'm assuming every one is different) shows that nuts are considered fats, not protein.  There is protein in the nuts but she explained that I would need too many nuts to reach my protein requirement for the snack, which would make it too high in fat.  I can still eat nuts, but not as my main protein source.

Some snacks I have are 1/2C of cottage cheese and sliced peach, 1/2 banana with peanut butter, cheese and crackers, crackers or veggies with hummus.

Each Dr & dietician will have different guidelines but I found that my post-meal BG has been great after following these guidelines and entering everything into Sparkpeople has been a HUGE help in getting me comfortable.

I'm sure others will have good suggestions too.  Good luck and PM me if I can help further.

  • Maybe your not eating enough carbs and protein. Since you haven't had your appt with the nutritionist it is hard to say. But they are very helpful. Usually I feel like I am eating all the time and stay pretty full.

    My meal plan is:

breakfast: 30 g carbs no fruit in the morning

    snack: 15 g carbs

    lunch: 45 g carbs

    snack: 15 g carbs

    dinner: 45 g carbs

    snack: 15 g carbs

So here are some things I eat:

breakfast: 2 frozen waffles w/ sugar free syrup and sausage, english muffin with peanut butter, eggs and 2 pieces of toast, lowfat yogurt with a granola bar and a handful of peanuts

snacks: cheese & crackers, granola bar and string cheese, fruit and a handful of nuts, sugar free pudding cup and some peanut butter.

lunch/ dinner: 2 soft shell tacos and cup of fruit, Meat(chix, beef, pork) with a veggie and either some pasta or potatoes, piece of meat lasgna and a salad, cheeseburger and fruit or some pasta.

For protein I like making a bunch of Bob Evan's sausage links at a time. Then when I need a quick protein to pair with a snack or something I just heat up a few links that I had already cooked. Otherwise I do alot of cheese, peanut butter, and peanuts too.

    Hope that helps!

  • Hi,

My guidelines are more along the lines of Danielle's (the second poster). I you send me a private message with your email address, I can send you some additional materials my SIL (who is a registered dietician!) put together for me.

When I was diagnosed during my first pregnancy, I didn't get much help from the dietician I was sent to. Thankfully there is one in my family who really knows her stuff!
