Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

LOs with milk intolerance

My DS currently has a milk intolerance.  When we started the transition to whole milk at 11 1/2 months, he had horrible issues with diarrhea and diaper rash.  His pedi said to wait until 14 months to try again due to the severity of his problems.  I know this happens to many children and after a month or two their bodies adjust.  My question is, for those with LOs with/who have had this issue, when was your LO able to drink regular milk again?  What did your pedi suggest using if they were unable to drink regular milk after the 2nd try?  Right now, our pedi said to use Toddler formula, but just curious what other pedis suggested and what their reasoning was.  TIA!

Re: LOs with milk intolerance

  • We are using Soy milk right now and it is doing okay.  We will try to switch back to whole milk in a couple months.

  • We're using soy for now.  She can now handle cheese, so we're hoping she can eventually have cow's milk.  My ped said soy was the best option, second would be hemp.  She said to avoid almond or rice milks since neither of those has protein, which is a significant part of why babies need milk.

  • DD has diarrhea and rash every time we try to give her straight cow milk. She drinks a combination of organic kefir (cow milk based but thicker and has 10 pro-biotic cultures and is good for their tummies), organic coconut milk, organic hemp milk, and organic almond milk, as well as organic soy and hazelnut on occasion.
  • I would just have to caution those of you who use soy milk as it can really mess up with the hormonal balance for LOs (adults as well).  It has something to do with consuming soy in a nontraditional form (vs tofu or tempra).  If you do a google search you should be able to find some information.  (I read an article once I think called the Dark Side of Soy).  Personally, I would give hemp, coconut, almond or rice milk (one of those does contain soy though and I can't remember which) and then offer high protein foods like eggs, beans, etc to offset the lack of protein.

  • She still is not able to drink regular milk; she drinks soy milk.  My pedi never suggested an alternative, she didn't seem worried about it even though I brought it up.  I did breastfeed her until she was 15 months old.  I tried toddler formula, she refused it.  She refused all alternatives to milk until just recently.  HTH!
