question about paying for delivery and hosptial stay

in 3rd Trimester
does the hospital want the cost of delivery, hosptial stay etc. asap when you are released from the hospital? or do they mail your insurance first and send you a bill? just curious. ?

    When I went to triage a few weeks ago to be checked they didn't charge me a thing and I got a statement in the mail a week later saying they were billing my insurance and would bill me afterwards for anything not covered.

    I got my bill about 3 months later. They bill insurance first, and then sent me a bill for the remainder.

    is this a serious question? do you think they ask for a check on your way out the door even when you have insurance???

    Mine says that they will bill the insurance company first.  I had to preregister to they already have all my info.  Anything not covered by insurance is due at check out (long distance phone calls, social  security card, a few other things).  Also circumcision may or may not be covered by insurance.

    You will get a bill after they bill the insurance for whatever is remaining. Set up a payment plan right away as the bill will still be high! A c-section can cost $35,000 and even if you have good insurance (pays for 80%) that is still $7000 out of your pocket!

    I pre-registered with DS so the hospital had all of our insurance information about 2 months prior to his delivery. The day I was admitted, I was having contractions and trying to breathe thru them when someone from the office came to my room and asked for my hospital co-pay. DH went down with her, paid the $250 co-pay and then came back up to the room:) So our co-pay portion was paid the day of admittance.

    The rest went thru insurance and I received a statement a few months after his birth.

    I would see if you have a copay for L&D and/or hospital stays in general. That might be due at the time of service.

    Some demand payment in advance.  You should call & ask your hospital or insurance!

    As soon as I pre-registered with my hospital, they checked out my insurance, and sent me an estimate and told us to pay it in the 7 month of the pregnancy. They also said that if I need an induction or c-section, then we can pay half of what we are estimated to owe at that time and the rest at delivary.

    Miss Mod, it's not a ridiculous question. Someone a week or two ago said their hospital actually required them to pay their copay when checking in, which for a hospital stay can be a pretty big sum of money. For me it's a $500 copay per day in the hospital, but I will not be billed for anything else during my stay. I have yet to find out if I must pay that at check-in.

    maybe i should clarify. i am starving and have a headache so i wasn't thinking correctly when i typed it out.. lol because i honestly didn't think they expect a $14k+ check right up front. what i meant to ask is,? if you have a deductible and/or copay, do you pay that up front or do they bill it to you later??

    I think it depends on the hospital and your insurance. ?When I pre-registered at the hospital they told me they were going to call my insurance company for pre-authorization. ?I will have to pay a copay plus 10% of the total charges (my insurance only covers 90%). ?However, I don't know if they're going to bill me later for the 10% or make me pay it upon discharge.

    This isn't a stupid question. And my hospital apparently sends the patient a bill at the same time they bill the insurance, so if you don't notice the fine print that mentions that they may still be waiting for payment from the insurance company, you might panic when you saw the balance due.

    I had this happen with my big u/s which I had to do at the hospital, and I had it happen with the treatment from my m/c last year.  Both large bills that eventually got cut back to what I expected, but the first time it was a scary surprise.
