Difficulty with Stairs after delivery?? (C-Section or Vaginal)

I live in a two-story home and all of our bedrooms and full bathrooms are upstairs. Although we do have room to where we could set up a bedroom downstairs, we only have a half bathroom with just a toilet and sink down there. I have considered moving in with the in-laws (one story house) for those last few months when I can?t manage the stairs anymore. But, I am now beginning to think about AFTER the delivery and if the stairs will still be a problem then. I may be over thinking this but I do NOT want to stay with our in-laws after the girls are here. I?d like to have that time with just DH, I, and the twins. I?d like to make it absolutely clear when I move in that it?s only temporary b/c his Mom mentioned us even staying after the girls where here.

Did you have difficulty managing stairs after your delivery? I am unsure if I will have a c-section or vaginal delivery at this point so I would appreciate different viewpoints on this. Thanks!

Re: Difficulty with Stairs after delivery?? (C-Section or Vaginal)

  • I had a vaginal delivery (with second-degree tearing) and I didn't really have trouble with stairs after delivery. I had to move a little carefully in general the first week or two but the stairs were OK.

  • I had a c with my son, and have a really big flight of stairs to climb. I remember being worried about it too- but you know, it was fine. I don't remember any problems with pain at all going  up or down (probably more pregnancy related amnesia- lol).

Dh just  bought a small fridge to keep in our room which will  be really handy when they arrive- you could keep water, snacks, etc. if you had to.

I hope you don't have issues- but don't think  the worst- and moving might cause you some unnecessary stress. I treasure the time with dh alone- as it sounds you do too.

  • I had some difficulty afterwards with stairs (vaginal delivery, 2nd degree tear), but it was due to knee pain. I started with bad knee pain in the third trimester (probably due to all the extra swelling and weight gain), and unfortunately it hasn't really gotten much better for me even after I lost a majority of the weight. It isn't unmanageable though. Just take your time, especially in the first week or two as your body adjusts to the change in your center of gravity.
  • I had a c-section with my twins and had no problem with stairs when I got home. My advice if you do have a c section get out of bed asap. The nurses had me out of bed within 12 hrs of the section and I really think it made my recovery go much quicker. By day two I was able to walk around with minimal pain. Also get a binder from the hospital the pressure really helped me be able to move around. By the time i got out of the hospital I was moving just fine only felt a little sore and now two weeks later Im back to normal.

I wouldnt be so quick to move unless the stairs really become a problem. staying active before the delivery can make the recovery easier.

  • our bedroom and only bathroom is on the second floor an d I managed fine before and after a c-section...just went slowly on the stairs and took everything we needed up once at night...I wouldn't move b/c of them...no way...

I guess I am concerned mostly with the possibility of pre-term labor and trying to reduce my risk as much as possible. I?m not opposed to a little bit of pain when I get home afterwards!

  • we only have 1 bathroom- upstairs.  I didn't have any trouble going up and down after my c/s. I took it slow- but actually had to remind myself to take it slow- b/c it didn't bother me at all.

after my vaginal birth with DS1 -where i had a 4th degree tear- different story... just standing hurt - doing stairs hurt... pretty much everything hurt- i was MISERABLE for about 8+ weeks.... I loved my c/s!

  • I had a c/s with my DD and by the day I went home (5 days later) I had no problem with stairs.
  • I live in a townhouse and all our bathrooms are upstairs, while our kitchen is on the middle level.  I was on bedrest and limited to one trip up and down the stairs a day for 3 weeks, and managed just fine.  DH would bring me breakfast, I would take a daily "field trip" downstairs for lunch, and he would bring me up dinner when he came home.

After the babies (vaginal with some tearing) I was still limited but not just to once a day.  I also couldn't carry the babies up or down the stairs.  But I was pumping and nursing so much that I was upstairs most of the time anyway.

  • Oh- forgot to add- you'll be fine at home in other words!  If it's too hard or you're on bedrest, you can set up camp downstairs for during the day and go upstairs for bed at night (will be a nice change of scenery if you are on bedrest) and you should be ok to do the same after the babies come.  It sounds like moving in with your fam would be stressful for you, do what you think would be most comfortable.
