I seen a MFM specialist today to determine our treatment for MTHFR. Well, I have really been doing alot of research just because I feel I need to be informed. So I was prepared for a treatment of extra folic acid, and possible shots. Low and behold, there is not a treatment plan. He thinks that because my homocystine level is normal that having both c defects should not be a problem. I am totally worried now. I just feel like with no treatment im at risk for another miscarriage. Anyone going through this or know any more info. Please let me know..

i also have mthfr....my doctor is putting me on folgard and a baby aspirin. I am still kind of confused with this mutation!

I have 2 copies of the Homo MTHFR also and I have been taking baby aspirin and Neevo daily since our second loss...I still had a third loss but I don't think it is related as my homocysteine level was normal HTH

I have MTHFR also.. I was treated with Folgard (folic acid, B6, and B12) and baby aspirin daily. I actually have had a successful pregnancy since my diagnosis so it is entirely possible..

Im sorry your dr didnt have a plan for you... I would maybe get a second opinion...

Also I can tell you that my dr said I would need to be treated for this my entire life, even when not pg because it puts you at a higher risk for heart attack or stroke because of the clotting..

I have two copies of c677t an d when I was tested, normal homocystine levels.

For it, I am taking 1 mentax/day (a "converted" form of folic acid) + 4mg of straight folic acid, in addition to whatever is in my other vitamins. However, I did have a NTD child.

My first RE recommended adding Lovenox once a BFP occurs. My current RE doesn't think that it would help. My OBGYN said the Lovenox would be fine to start in the 6th week of PG. So there, three docs, three opinions.

I have the same thing you do and my hematologist suggested I take a baby aspirin daily the rest of my life along with extra folic acid while ttc and pregnant. Although I do take a prescription folic and b vitamin pill it's not as though you can't just buy the over the counter vitamins. You can look up how much folic and b vitamins are in Folgard or Fabb tabs and then just take that amount yourself.

Most docs don't believe in treating MTHFR with lovenox anymore. The baby aspirin will thin your blood and if you're thinking you'd like more then you could supplement with high doses of fish oil which will also thin the blood some.

We were diagnosed with 2 copies of Homo MTHFR last October, after our 2nd loss. My homocystine levels have always been normal.

My OB said that they dont treat it, but changed my prenatal to PreNate DHA (has L-methalfolate, the folic acid that we can absorb) and added Metanx daily. I asked for lovenox, but was declined.

We went to an RE and he recommended that we stay with the protocol from the OB, again no lovenox. We had a 3rd loss and switched REs

My current RE treats proactively. We are still taking PreNate DHA & Metanx plus added baby aspirin and Lovenox injections daily (beginning at ovulation and thru either end of 1st tri or AF). He feels that it is too late to start injections after BFP.

My philosophy is that the lovenox doesnt cross the placenta, so it cant hurt... and it might help.... So why not??? I mean, I don't enjoy daily injections in my stomach, but if it means I can have a take home baby, then Im all for it!

thanks for your advice, do you know if your homocystine levels were normal before? Or are they normal because of the treatment?

I have a feeling I will need to find a new doctor for that next opinion. I do not want to do shots either, but I do not think that I will be able to get over another miscarriage knowing I didnt do everything that I could. I know that the research is sort of cloudy, there isnt an exact yes treat it or no dont answer. Does your insurance cover the injections? I also feel that the injections are to late if you have already had a bfp. The most critical time would be before you test. I thank you for your advice. I now know that a second opinion is critical and what I need to do.

what is metanax? And can I just request to be switched to a different prenatal vit? thanks again..

im guessing mine was since she told me a had mthfr and put me on meds
