used playards? (also posted in nurseries/gear)

Hi Ladies... I could use your opinions, please!

What is your opinion of using a hand-me-down playard?

A family member gave us their pack n'play (from 2003.)  It looks to be in excellent shape, but the mattress board bows a bit (in the elevated position) when I put any weight on it.  I want one as a back up if crib sleeping doesn't happen right away and am torn if I should buy a new one or if I'm worrying too much.  First time mom!  :)

THANK YOU!

  • IMO I wouldn't use it, exspecially since it may be a little damaged.  I'm sure you get find a cheap one at Wal-mart or something.

  • I have no problems with it.  You could always look and see if there is a way to add extra support in the middle.

  • If you end up deciding to get a new one, you could always go to BRU and use the exchange thing they have[if it's still going on.] I think it's like 25% off your purchase of a new item

  • IMO, hand me downs are awesome. As far as a pack n' play goes... a newborn will probably put less pressure on the mattress than you would with you hand. I wouldn't use it if it caves in the middle and look hazardous. You could always buy one new for $50 at Walmart if that would make you more comfortable.

  • While I hate the thought of used car seats, mattresses, cribs, and clothes(unless from sister), a pack-n-play is fine.  EXCEPT not this one...if the mattress board bows, it is damaged and not safe.  No matter how different the weight is between your hand and an infant, it is still not in perfect condition.  Take the pack-n-play to BRU and trade it in for a new one, saving 25%.
