So nervous to tell my boss...

I am so nervous to tell my boss.  I have been at my new job for 5 months now.  I know it's silly, but I had to share my anxiety.  How did everyone's boss react?  Were they surprised?  Supportive?  Was there a long pause...  I don't know what to expect!

Re: So nervous to tell my boss...

  • im a social worker and i work with all social workers so i think maybe i have a little advantage there...it's very family friendly around here! my boss was really supportive and i told her when i was 4 weeks! she has been there through three m/c though so she is very excited for me and dh. good luck to you. i think when you tell your boss say it in a confident, happy tone. if you go int here all scared like you are giving bad news you leave the door open to them thinking it's bad. maybe also ask about setting up a time to talk about what your leave will look like and stuff like that so the boss knows you are planning ahead and being responsible. any reasonable human being would be excited for someone sharing that kind of news. good luck!

  • I haven't spilled the beans yet. But I agree w/ Fryday- go in there and say it with confidence - and make sure to have a plan about how you are going to plan ahead and get stuff done/be back in 3  months to keep going, you're excited to be there, etc. Reassure the boss in case they need it...

GL! Are you doing it today? Let us know how it goes!

  • I was afraid to tell my boss.  He gave me the exact response that I expected...long pause followed by a mumbled congratulations and then back to business.  I am in a weird position because I am the only person who is trained for what I do.  I think he is worried that I won't come back after maternity leave.  I am glad that I got it over with and we were able to move on.  He has actually been a lot more supportive in the last couple of weeks.  My other boss was the complete opposite.  He was extremely excited for me.

  • I want to tell sooner bec, I am so bad at lying and I am getting really self conscious.  Fortunately, I do work for a company that is very family friendly - i am sure that is will go well...  But that is very good advice to go in with confidence and have a plan!  Thanks!

  • I told my boss at my previous job when I was about 7 weeks, I had only been working there about 6 months at the time, and now I just got a new job, and don't even know who my boss is! But at my old job my boss was so excited!  And still is!  But now,  I'm scared as hell!!!! I don't know what I'm gonna do.... good luck!

  • I had only been at my job for 8 months when I told my boss. I was a bit worried that they'd think that as soon as I got this job I thought I was home free and got knocked up (there are good mat benefits). Anyway, my boss was very excited and interested! We chatted for 1/2 hour about all sorts of things...nursery furniture, mat clothes, MW v. OB, etc. I think what helped was that I had a plan re. mat leave. My job isn't very easily filled on a term basis, and I am the only one that does my job. I think she really appreciated the fact that I was concerned about my role and leaving the department (well, the whole University in fact) in a lurch.

So go in there with a plan and an open mind and you may be pleasantly surprised. Also, know your rights and benefits w/r/t mat leave.

  • I actually just told my boss today.  It went well.  He was genuinely excited for me.  He had a big smile on his face and kept saying congrats.  This is my second pregnancy with the company so he knows I'm not going anywhere.  Since I'm the only one who does my job he knows I will help where ever I can when I'm on leave.  With DS I did some work from home during my 17 week leave and plan on doing the same this time.

I agree with PP, go in with a plan.  Tell them you aren't going anywhere and what you plan on doing and how long you will be gone.
