Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Solids at 4 mos?

Did anyone's pedi suggest starting any solids at 4 months?  Just curious as we have our 4 month appointment today and I was wandering if most started solids at 4 or 6 months.  Thanks!

Re: Solids at 4 mos?

  • Our pedi recommended starting solids at 4 mos. (we FF), but I hear that if you EBF, many will recommend waiting until 6 mos.

  • our pedi did.. he said start with 1 week of rice cereal and see how it does then continue with 1 week of whatever we wanted to start first one veggie or one fruit until he tries them all and has no severe reactions. LO was ready and loves him some sweet potatos these days :)
  • I BF and our friend who's a pedi (not our pedi, since we haven't discussed solids yet) said that new research shows that starting solids closer to 4 months is less likely to cause later food allergies than once thought.  We'll probably be starting at 4 months once we clear it with DD's pedi.

  • I started LO at 4 months and it was great.  When I had DD#1 we were told to wait till 6 months and I am so happy they moved it up.  DD is such a good eater and sleeper and loves her food.

  • He said to go ahead and start cereal.  So we did around 4.5 months.  She didn't like rice, so we went to oatmeal. She loved it.  But it didn't love her.  She had a reaction and pooped her brains out for about 4 days.  Poor thing.

So we stopped all cereals and just waited until this past weekend, she's now 5.5 months, and started green beans.  LOVED them!

  • Us! She actually started them this past friday, a bit before 4 months (the thought was that it may help her reflux, and she's ready--doubled birthweight, holds head well, no tongue thrust reflex, shows interest in food). She's doing great so far...only 3 days in and she's almost got the hang of rice cereal.

Interesting. I recently read that research is recommending that the longer you wait the less likely you'll encounter food allergies.

  • Our pedi says we can start any time or wait for a couple of months.  I started DS1 at 5mo and will probably start DS2 around 6 months unless he starts reaching for the food and showing he wants to start sooner (like DS1 did).  Right now he just enjoys watching us eat.

  • I actually just posted this question to my FB friends the other day and got 50/50 results.  Meaning some mommies started their LO on food early and were totally happy about it, no problems whatsoever.  The other 50% said its horrible for LO's intestines.  I have to do some research for my LO, but if it were so horrible for babies tummies, why would pedi's recommend it for some babies?

  • DS is FF and our pedi said we could start cereal now if I wanted.  I'm not.  I'm starting with organic oatmeal and waiting a few more weeks till DH is home from Afghan so he doesn't miss it.  :)

Pedi did say wait until 6 months to start veggies/fruits.  I was going to do that anyway.
