Car Seat???

Ok.... I am a clueless first time mommy-to-be.  I've been working on my registry.  I've taken care of just about everything except for the car seat.  I've registered for the travel system that has the baby carrier that comes out and clips into the car as well as an extra base for that one for my hubby's truck.  I just don't know what to register for as far as the bigger carseat when the baby outgrows the infant carrier.  Any suggestions?  There are so many prices and brands to choose from that I'm just overwhelmed!  HELP!

Re: Car Seat???

  • I know Britax makes a good one

  • We got the Evenflo Symphony 65 for DS when he turned 1 and LOVE it! He sits up high in it and can see out the window which is priceless for that age. Everyone who sees it asks me about it because of how high it sits and they wish they had bought it for their LO. It goes up to 100 pounds!

  • We have a Britax Marathon, and it's great!  However, we didn't register for it.  We bought it when DD was 11 months old, and she didn't need it until she was 13 months.

  • We registered for the Graco Myride 65.  Now I'm curious about this evenflow one though....
  • I am not registering for one, because the travel system we have registered for (and was already purchased!  woo hoo!) will get us through the first year.  Then we will just buy our own.  My friend got the convertible one, that goes to a booster seat when her son turned one.
  • We will not be registering for one.

  • People love the Britax seats, and I've also heard the Sunshine Radian is good.

But I would also think about a couple of things-for one, you have no idea yet when you'll need it-it could be a year from now and then you you just have to store it until then, and B) car seats expire, so I'd want one that is new when I start using it (as opposed to already being a year old) so it'll last longer-and could possibly be used if there's a baby #2.

  • We have a Britex Marathon and a evenflo tribute in our cars.  Make sure you go into BRU or where ever and try out the carseat in your car.  Not all carseats fit in all cars correctly.

  • We've had all Eddie Bauer after the infant carrier except for our current small boosters.  We really like the Eddie Bauers.  They wash well and seem to be comfy for the kids.
  • We have the Britax Boulevard as the convertible carseat for DD, but you won't need to buy one for over a year.  Wait to buy one.

Added:  Also, most kids outgrow the carseat height before the weight, so factor that into your decision making.  You want your child in a 5-point harness as long as possible.  As a side note, you also want them rear facing as long as possible (up to the carseat limits) because it's so much safer.

  • I thought I might add that we switched to a convertible carseat at about 9 mo old not because ds had outgrown his infant seat (he was only 19lbs at 1 year old) but more because it was SO heavy to carry around and they can see out of a convertible carseat much better and its more comfy at that point.  I was glad we had registered for the carseat because we got the discount at BRU.  You can add it at the last minute if you think someone might really buy it for you but then you get the most recent edition of the carseat when you go to buy it.

  • Thanks for the advice everyone!  I may add at the last minute like someone said.  I see the point about not needing it for a year.  I was really unsure on what to do about this.  Thanks again!!
  • Here's a list of the convertible car seats that will last your LO the longest.  This is info from thebump car seat guru!  Hope it helps!

  • I recommend Britax.  I also suggest not registering for it.  We got DD's when she turned 1 - one was given to us as a birthday present for her and the other we saved up for.  The carseats have an expiration date and if they have been sitting on the shelves for a few months, then they are purchased more than a year before you need it, the seat may expire before you are done using it (especially if you want it to last through more than 1 child).
