I don't know, but for now I've put my foot down. I didn't protest when dh wanted to introduce ds to the Star Wars series, all four Indiana Jones films, The Goonies, all of the Spiderman movies, etc. But when he suggested starting the LoTR series I absolutely said no. Way too scary/violent/gory, IMO. I don't know when I'll be comfortable with him watching them- maybe 10ish?
(I also put my foot down on the various Batman movies, FWIW. Those are some scary, twisted movies as well!)
I'd say 12. 9 or 10 is still so much a child whereas 12 is somehow more "pre-teen" category when they start being able to handle more movie-wise. Just a gut feeling. What age is it rated for?
My crazy @$$ MIL put them all in for my kids to watch one day. Dh and I own them on DVD. I never imagined she would pick those for the kids to watch. This has been a good year or more as well. So they were around 3&4yrs old. OMG I could have killed her when I walked in and that is what they were watching. I asked if she was watching it while they took a nap and it just hadnt finished before they woke up and she said "oh no, we watched the others this morning"
Yeah..I should have known though. She did give L COFFEE at 5months old!! Oh and she fed the girls ice cream at 4 months old. We hadnt even started baby food and she picked strawberry ice cream to feed them. WITH real strawberries in it. *shes a real winner and is over qualified for Monster In Law*
So...for me I would say 10. I too would like them to read the books. They are much better than the movie anyways.
Re: how old for lord of the rings?
There is some scary shiit in those movies. I probably wouldn't let my kids watch them before they were about 9 or 10.
My husband says 12.
