Daycare question about naps

DS started daycare several weeks ago and he loves it, plays the whole time he's there and never cries anymore even when I drop him off!  It's a home daycare with 6 kids ranging in age from 11 months (DS is the youngest) to 5 years.  This woman has an excellent reputation and I am very happy with this place except for one problem: at home DS naps for 2 hours but at daycare he only takes a 45-60 minute nap because he is always awakened by the other kids making noise, and she doesn't take the older kids outside or try to keep them quiet when the younger kids are napping.  It's a small house so there's no place she could put him to nap in peace anyway.  DS really needs his naps or he gets cranky if he doesn't nap enough and he is a kid who plays hard and sleeps hard.  Do you think he will learn to nap longer there or should I try to find another daycare that has the space for kids to nap in quiet?

Re: Daycare question about naps

  • this is one of the reasons i dislike in-home centers... because kids of varying ages can create problems.  I certainly would NOT want her to take the other kids outside while my child was inside napping!

if you really like the daycare - give it some time... but I personally prefer daycare centers where children are in a room with only children their age.

  • I just posted about the same issue earlier this week.  I think the consensus was that it might not be better anywhere else, so if this is the only issue, it's probably best to suck it up and push through.

FWIW, I can definitely sympathize.  DD is cranky and/or crying every night after DC because she doesn't nap long enough.

    Really? What problems besides naps?

  • My son started an in home daycare 6 wks ago and his naps aren't as good there as they are at home. Not sure why, by I can assume because he's the only one young enough to nap and his pack in play isn't as comfy as his bed at home. It's just one of the things we deal with because otherwise we are happy and we can afford her

  • I would wait a little longer and see if he adjusts.  We had a similar situation b/c DS had to go from 2 naps to 1 and he adjusted.  There was bigger kids there in the summer but I think daycare provider tries hard to keep everyone quiet at nap time.  DS is doing fine with naps there now.  Good luck!!

  • I am a little bit worried about this as well because my DD is starting DC next week, and we also have an in-home, similar to yours. They have about 5-7 kids with 2 providers, and DD will be the youngest one there. I don't know how well she will nap there. But we're going to give it a shot and see if she will adjust.

  • Can you ask her to use a white noise machine or play music in the room where he's napping?  Otherwise, I would give it time to see if he adjusts.  DS is in a center and he slept terribly when he was in the infant room because not everyone went down for naps at the same time.  In the toddler room where they do all sleep together, he naps much better (most of the time).

  • my in home dcp has quiet time for the older kids while the younger ones nap, every day for 2 hours...that is when she usually works on "school type" stuff with the older ones so the house is quieter...I would imagine your LO will adjust...
  • this was Carson when he first started an inhome daycare center at 13 months old.  he was there 2 days a week and it took him about 6 weeks to learn to nap around other kids for a whole 2 + hours. at first he would maybe nap for one hour but it got better with time.

however, all the kids napped at the same time.  there were not older kids running around.  i would think eventually your dc will learn to sleep through the noise.  give it more time.
