Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4 month old sleep

What time does your nighttime routine start for your 4 month old? What time do you put him/her to sleep?  DS had been sleeping through the night (9-6:30) since he was about 7 weeks old.  This past week he started waking up at 5 am.  Then, last night he was continually waking up from 3 am to 6 am!  From an article I just read (5 ways to get your baby to STTN) I am finding that maybe my bedtime routine is too late.  The article points out that it is counter-intuitive, but that babies 1 year and under should go to bed at 7 or 8 to help them sleep longer.  It says that an earlier bedtime allows for the baby to not be overly tired.  When a baby is overly tired they tend to wake up earlier because they restless.  We normally do bath, bottle and book starting at 8, so that DS is in bed at 9.  Wondering if I should bump it up an hour??

Re: 4 month old sleep

  • DS is out by 8pm, usually closer to 7:45 (we start the bathtime routine around 7:10 or he starts nursing around 7:30 if it's not a bath  night).

That said, DS rarely sleeps past 5:30ish (ugh) so i'm sure not if it helps or not!

  • We start at 7:30. Sometimes earlier if he's fussy. My son also went through what they call the 4 month wakeful period for about a week and a half where he just kept waking up several times a night. I'd give it another week or so before considering changing times. Chances are thats whats going on and he'll go back to sleeping through the night again.

  • im in 4 month old hell. My dd who used to sleep from 9-6 sometimes waking to eat at 3 and then right back to sleep, is now awake several times a night. We think she is teething though.

Even if i try to bump the night routine up an hour, she will still stay awake till 9-10 no matter what. I am going to try to get through this month before we change anything, good luck to you!

  • We start the bedtime routine around 8 depending on her mood.  She is usually a pretty decent sleeper and goes 8:30-6:30 with maybe one paci replacement somewhere in between.  There is definitely a restless period around 4 months, though, so that could explain the more frequent wakings

  • My LO goes to bed at 10pm and wakes anywhere from 6am to 8am... She doesn't sleep all day- I would love her to go to bed at 8 or 9pm...

  • When DS was 4 mos old, we started the nighttime routine around 9pm.  I nursed him to sleep and he would sleep anywhere from 6-8 hours, wake up, nurse, back to sleep til between 6 and 8.  We started around 5mos putting him to bed around 7:30 ish.  You are right, though, most sleep experts suggest putting LO to bed earlier rather than later.

You may very well be experiencing the 4 mos wakeful and it may have nothing to do with his bed time...

  • I start bedtime routine at about 830pm.  Bathe, baby massage, swaddle, nurse & to crib.  LO used to STTN, however for the past 3-4weeks she is up every 2-3 hours.  (with an occasional night where she'll give me a 4 hr stretch)  I am pretty sure its a combo of teething/ 4 mo wakeful.

  • We start our bedtime depending on her last nap and tired signs. But it is usually around 6:15 - 6:30 and she is usually asleep by 7:00-7:15.  We are blessed with a good sleeper.  She STTN until about 6:30 - 7:00 am. The past few mornings she has waken up around 4:45 - 5:15 but she has gotten herself back to sleep. She also takes 3-4 naps/day, usually 4 for 30 minutes each.

I would try bumping up her bedtime a little bit. From what I've read most (not all) babies are ready for bed between 7-8 pm.  Try bumping it up by 15-20 minutes.
