Alternative to bassinet?

So my plan from the beginning was just to put LO in their crib in their own room from the time we bring him home from the hospital, but DH told me the other day that he would feel more comfortable with LO being in our room at least for the first week or few.  We won't have LO in our room for long so I don't really want to invest a ton of money in a bassinet or pack n' play.  I saw some cute "moses baskets" on the target website but I don't even know what those are used for - are they an appropriate sleeping option?  What are some other sleeping options (other than a bassinet or pack n' play) for LO for that short amount of time?

Re: Alternative to bassinet?

  • I'm pretty sure a baby could use a moses basket to sleep in, but I think the total cost would end up being the same as a simple bassinet. I think they are like $50 and up for the basket, and $30-$40 for the stand. Personally I think a pack'n'play is most cost effective because it can be used for a long time, but that is just my opinion.

  • I would do a PNP b/c you can get the most use out of it.  There are some with the little bassinet part (newborn napper) built in, but I don't even think that is necessary- just one with the raised part is fine.  A moses basket would also work but really seems like a waste of money to me for how short of a period it would be used.

  • I'm thinking of using this:

After we are done with the first couple of weeks it will just come downstairs to use as needed or go to a grandparent's house.

  • Ditto on the PNP. Also suggest the Fisher Price Rock N Play sleeper it's about $50. He uses it for night and day. If you don't mind LO in your bed, we have one of those sleepers that goes in between us. It was around $50 too.

  • We're using a Graco Travel Lite Crib.  It's like a mini-PNP and we'll use it as such afterwards.  They have one at BRU for $100, but I've seen it for $90 or less on other websites.  I agree with the PPs who said that the Moses basket will be the same price by the time you buy the basket and a stand for it.

This b/c it also has a slight incline which would help if your baby has any kind of digestive issues.  It is lightweight and folds up easy too.

  • we used his pack n play. it came with a bassinet part
  • Well, pack n' play is out of the question.  We aren't getting one and anyways, it would be too big to fit in our bedroom in our apartment.  I showed DH some moses baskets last night and he really liked them.  If we got one of those I wasn't planning on getting a stand - are the stands absolutely necessary or would we be able to do without?

this. I really think a pack n' play is the best way for you to go. You will use it for traveling, holding baby while you shower, etc. They can be used for quite awhile, not just for sleeping. I'd say consider this a bit more.

  • We did a moses basket and loved it.  It was completely for superficial reasons at first (I just thought they looked super cool) and it turned out to be great because I could literally move the basket and stand with one hand from the bedroom to the living room (we're on one level).  I do agree that when you add the cost of the stand, you will come out the same price as the bassinet but you have the advantage of the open top.

  • ps you don't have to get a stand but I didn't feel comfortable without it. I know a friend who just put hers on the living room floor.  I thought about putting ours on top of the wide trunk in our room but it still didn't feel comfortable and just got a stand.  your call
