Baptism Question

So.. I would like to have DD baptized but have no idea how to go about doing this. We do not belong to a church and I was not baptized as a child due to differences of religion between the two families.

How would I go about doing this? or am I out of luck?

TIA!

Re: Baptism Question

  • It all depends on where you want to go. Is there a denomination you fit best with? This is the first & most important thing to find out as being baptized is not just about water on the head but a commitment that you will raise your child in a Christian home. Plus it's never to late to be baptized I have seen where the parents are baptized at the same time as the kids, which I think is really cool.

Some churches might like you to be baptized some don't. I know that when Mr.A was Baptized they never asked when or if DH was baptized, Aiden was baptized in my old "home" church.

Edit: Sorry I keep forgetting this :)

This exactly.  But if there is a church you have in mind, just call the pastor or priest and ask.  It doesn't ever hurt to ask.

  • i don't know this for certain - so i could be wrong, but i think most churches want you to be a member (or at least a regular attender) in order to be baptized/have someone baptized - as a pp mentioned, having to do with raising the child in a christian home... but like i said, i could be wrong, different denominations don't do everything the same way, i'm sure.

that being said, our pastor just gave a sermon on baptism, since they're doing a bunch tomorrow at the church picnic tomorrow, and he stated that biblically, anyone can do the baptizing, as long as they, too, are a believer.  i had never thought of that, but it makes sense.

and you can get baptized at anytime - in fact all of the baptisms recorded in the bible, none mention babies being baptized.  i wasn't until i was 16.  it's just as meaningful in adulthood as childhood. :)

    good luck!

  • I know at our church you DO NOT have to be a member (we attend a lutheran church and are not members even though we go regularly).  They want you to attend a class which is 2-3 hours and then they will baptize you or your baby.  We will have our daughter baptized there this year after she is born.

I have never been to a non-denominational church or a lutheran church that requires you to be a member.  If there are a few churches you are interested in, I would call them and ask or if you are interested in attending the church, try a couple out and go from there!  From my experience, many churches are more than happy to help you with this. The church secretary can also be very helpful with information!

  • A lot of times it depends on the religion.  At our church people can still be baptized WITHOUT becoming members.  Although my husband and I are both baptized, the church has no rule about being members for baptizing your children.  As many others have said as well, call around.
