Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Lazy eye?

I know I've heard that babies can sometimes have their eyes go in different directions at first, but how long is this normal? So far I had never noticed anything different about my DD's eyes, but just today it looks like she may have a teeeny bit of lazy eye. At this point would it still go away? She's 3 weeks.

Re: Lazy eye?

  • I think their eyes being all over the place is considered "normal" until 2 or 3 months. I could be wrong.. pretty sure our pedi said by 2 months he shouldn't be going cross eyed anymore, and by 3 months it could be an issue. He doesn't do it anymore, stopped around 4-ish weeks.

  • Not sure about a lazy eye but DS has one eye that opens better than the other.  It seems like every few days it gets better and closer to matching the other...hope lazy eyes are the same :)
  • my pedi said we could see it up to 6 months.  at 3 weeks I wouldn't worry at all

  • In WTEWYE, they said it should go away by 2 months.  Until then it is normal because they are still strengthening their eye muscles.  They said to let your Pedi know at two months if it hasn't stopped so they can catch it early on to prevent lazy eye.  It is fine at this point!

  • My DS still goes cross eyed every once in awhile. Doc said she would be concerned if he's still doing it at 6 mos.

  • definitely don't worry about it yet.  i have a lazy eye and dd had crossed eyes.  at 3 months, we watched for another month and then our pedi sent us to the specialist.

newborns appear cross-eyed sometimes b/c the eyelids are pulling apart like they should,  i wouldn;t worry!!

fwiw, dd had surgery at 4 months to correct the crossing.

  • The eye muscles are weak for the first 6 mo.  DD#1 had strabitmus ( cross eyes or wall eyes, her eyes went out) and had surgery at 9 mo.  I wouldn't worry about it unless it is very severe at 4 mo ( I had a pic of her where she was literally looking in opposite directions at the same time) and then you go to an eye MD and they'll tell you your options.  My niece had pretty bad cross eyes and they fixed on their own.  Too early to worry at 3 wks though.
  • At 3 weeks, babies arent able to focus their eyes, so they go different directions. I think its like up to 3 months sometimes before they are able to. Sometimes sooner
