Hospital Bags?

Anyone have a good list of what to pack in our hospital bags? I'm wondering how many outfits we may need for the baby and what kind...etc.

Also what is everyone doing for everyday outfits/pajamas for their December babies? It gets really cold here in the winter and I wonder what our baby is supposed to wear? Embarrassed

Re: Hospital Bags?

  • For the baby I am only taking 3-4 onesies. No diapers-hospital supplies those. A receiving blanket or 2.

For everyday outfits and jammies-It is going to be winter and I will most likely leave him in a onesie, socks, and hat for the first couple of weeks, with a blanket too.

Rule of thumb is what you are wearing plus one light to medium layer. I love hats on babies, they keep lots of body heat in.

  • I have not even begun to think about a hospital bag!  I probably should start looking into that... as far as how to dress baby.. the general rule is to dress them how you'd dress yourself plus one light layer.  the main thing to remember is babies will cry if they're too cold but the hardly ever cry if they're too warm!  you don't want them to overheat, so even tho all of those bundle-up outfits are adorable most of the time they're too much.  I'll probably stick with the long sleeve onesies plus those super soft newborn pants and socks or keep him in the footie onesies.

  • There's a nice checklist here on the bump under the pregnancy tools. I'm only planning on bringing one outfit to the hospital for the baby to come home in. I might bring a sleep and play outfit or long sleeve onesie for the baby to wear while in the hospital.

I live in Kansas and it gets pretty cold here (I know not as cold as Toronto b/c my sister-in-law). I'm planning on dressing the baby in long sleeve onesies and pants, sleep and play outfits, and long sleeve rompers. I'll just keep the baby wrapped in blankets or the swaddle me's. I've gotten some fleece/microfleece outfits for the baby.

  • For the hospital bag, I was thinking:

    • change of clothes/wear home outfit for me and hubby
    • PJ bottoms for me. I'll just use the hospital gown as my top. Maybe I'll take a sweatshirt in case it's cold.
    • Either extra socks or slippers for walking around the hospital
    • Come home outfit for baby. The hospital provides onesies for while they're there.
    • Blanket or 2 for baby
    • Toiletries- I think I'm just gonna get some travel size ones. It seems like it will be much easier.
    • Exercise ball, aka birthing ball- my hospital doesn't have them and I want to use one.
    • Camera
    • Breast pump- just in case I need it for any reason. I know the hospital provides them, but I am weird about that and refuse to use one that someone else has.

I was wondering the same thing about how to dress them. I don't want her to be cold, but I don't want her overheated, so I wasn't sure what a good balance was. I'm gonna ask at our infant care class.

  • A lot of what you are going to want to take to the hospital is going to depend on the hospital you're going to and what they provide. Take a tour of your birthing unit to find out.

When I took the tour of ours they actually gave us a list of what they recommend to bring, as well as what they provide (i.e. blankets, diapers, wipes for baby)

Just one outfit for us too...we had our childbirth class/hospital tour today and the instructor urged parents to just bring one outfit...in case the baby is in the nursery or someone else (not in your room) and they get dirty, your outfit could get tossed in their laundry by mistake.

  • I posted this website a couple weeks ago.  I was researching what to put in the hospital bag because I am trying to collect items (like travel sized toiletries) as I go along and stick stuff in the bag week by week.  Yes, I am an over planner but my mom always said if you have it you won't need it but if you need it you won't have it.  Anways, I thought it was helpful.

  • Thanks ladies! I just purchased our take home outfit from Old Navy! We don't know what we're having so I bought white fleecy bottoms and a white long sleeve body suit and then got one pink and one blue hoodie with cute little ears on them and matching hats . I figure we'll just return the other or give it away or keep it for the next baby.

Those are so cute. Our Old Navy here closed and I am so bummed. I loved them.

  • We live about 5 mins from the hospital so it won't be terrible for H or my parents to get something I forget but must haves for me is

    My own pillow and quilt

    My own toiletries

    My breast friend pillow

    Gum/hard candies

For my baby I'm bringing his bringing home outfit with a hat and then maybe an extra gown for the hosptial and socks. The hospital usually puts a kimono type shirt on them and no pants, so socks are a must.
