Babies: 9 - 12 Months

eating at a restaurant w/LO

We've only recently changed the carseat from the infant carrier/bucket to the convertible car seat.  Whenever we brought DS into a restaurant in his bucket carrier, he was awesome.  Never made a peep.  Sat or slept so quietly in the restaurant.  I'm a little nervous about bringing him out and having him sit in a high chair for so long.  I'd keep him in his stroller, but most places don't allow strollers because they're in the way.

Any tips on how to keep DS happy in a high chair?  The ones I've seen all look so big.  I don't know that DS would really be secure or comfortable in them with the huge opening to sit in.  We're going somewhere casual today to test the waters with DS in a high chair.  I'm afraid our easy dinners out are going to disappear for quite a while now!  :o(

  • There is a lap belt that you buckle. Give the kid some food and he should be happy

  • We give Gabriel some food and toys to keep him busy and he's fine.

  • I have seen people use the shopping cart cover in the high chair for extra padding I guess.  Our LO doesn't mind the high chair, we just feed her and keep her in the conversation.

  • It's so much easier than the carseat. DD loves to go to restaurants. We put her in the high chair with a blanket around her lap and under her arms, keeps her comfy and helps her stay still.

We give cheerios/puffs till the food gets here, and then we give her her food. She usually gets full about the same time we're finishing so it works out great.

I'd go out for every single meal if it wouldn't cost a fortune.

  • DS loves the highchair and being able to see and interact with other diners. He usually gets a lot of attention which he loves and it keeps him entertained. If he has spoon food we give him that while we wait for our food and then give him his finger foods while we eat. I always have extra O's so they keep him busy if he finishes eating before us. Sippy cup or toys on a tether (because he'll throw them down at some point) are good to have as well.

  • I agree with the p.p's... not only is it easier but ds seems to really enjoy himself sitting at the table like a big boy. we share our food with him which he thinks is awesome. We also bring some toys that we can clip to the chair with rings so if he drops them they don't go anywhere

  • I think it is way easier. I use a shopping cart cover to cover the high chair and we bought a tiny dinner at babies' r us (it is just a suction placemat that goes on the table). We either bring her food or I order a meal that I can share. Bring a few toys and try not to eat during really busy time taht could involve a lot of extra sitting. Good luck :)

  • We have a high chair cover that we use with DD and it pads the seat and makes it more comfy for her. We bring plenty of puffs/cheerios/mum mums and also feed her off our plates once we get out food. She is usually perfectly content to watch the people around her and eat.

You could also get a hook on high chair. We're planning on getting one soon so she can sit in the booth with us rather than out in the aisle like she is in restaurant high chairs.

  • I love this seat.  If folds up and you can carry it in with you.  Put it on a chair or in a  booth.  It is great.  Plus, your baby is the only one who has sat in it!

This.  We take this seat everywhere.  The highchairs don't work so well because the only place you can put toys or food is the table which is pretty far for LO to reach

  • Kaden loves the highchairs.  He's so busy either sharing our food or watching everyone around us, he never makes a fuss.
  • Now DD loves to be in a highchair and watch everything, wait for tidbits of food, eat her food, etc.  BUT there was a month to 6 weeks where she really was too small for my comfort and she was very unsure of things - live through that and it does get better.  Also, we've taken her in the stroller many times - they just remove a chair and it's not so much in the way.
  • DH works nights, so not only does LO go to restaurants, but I take him ALONE. As pp said, I use the sticky placemats and give LO crackers and Cheerios. I give him a few bites of my food, but I usually order a veggie for him....asparagus, green beens, etc. Oh.....don't forget the sippy cup!
