S/O carseats...safety Q

Can't find our owners manual for the infant seat, but you're not supposed to have the handle up while driving, right? Or is it ok? They make all these toys to hang on there, but when would you ever use them?

Re: S/O carseats...safety Q

  • Not sure if you're supposed to or not, but I do.

ETA: realized I wasn't clear at all...I DO leave mine up for the hanging toys.

  • I was just reading about this. You'd have to look at your manual to make sure, but most carseats (so says the website I just read) should have the handle down. It can break in an accident and cause injury to baby.

Until now, I had left it up.  : /

  • I pulled my manual out for this the other day since dh always leaves it up.  I have the graco travel system.  It has 5 locking positions, position A is when you have it as far forward as it will go which is usually how you have it when you are carring it, and then position E is when its all the way back so that its pretty much preventing it from tipping backward when sitting.

In the car I usually put it back to position C which is as far back as I can get it to go in my car.

It says in the manual  "NEVER use positions B or C in the vehicle".  So I guess if you have it all the way forward that its fine.

  • Depends on the seat.  We had ours installed by a cop certified to do the car seat checks and he said Graco (at least ours) the handle can go back, it doesn't need to be up.  Others must be up.  We have a Graco and we generally leave it up anyway since it's easier to get her in/out with it already up.
  • I've always left it up....as sort of a "roll bar" so to speak.  I guess I never thought of it in the context that it could break and hurt her.

  • They are supposed to be pushed back behind the seat for safety reasons, that is how ours is whenever we are driving.

    This.

  • We have a Graco Snugride and the manual says it has to be all the way up or all the way back, not in between. We usually have it all the way up.

  • In the car seat safety class we took before we had Ava, they told us to have it all the way back, because in a car accident the infant seat is made to rock forward (towards the back of the car) then back so the baby isn't jarred and get whiplash(or worse). if the handle us all the way up, it could hit the seat and jar the baby. i hope that makes sense, i'm not sure how to describe the rocking motion the car seat is supposed to do in an accident.

  • We have ours up per the graco manual. If we had it back then my car wouldn't be able to driven since I'd be super close to steering wheel.

I had to move LO out of the infant seat but this is what mine said. All the way up was fine. You have to read your manual to find out if it is okay for your seat though.
