Blended Families

Holidays?

How do your holidays work out, birthdays, Christmas. thanksgiving, or any other holidays your family practices?

Last year was crazy, having a blended family with in a blended family, haha it was crazy but some how we some managed to see everyone.

Edit: this was brought up on another bored I was lurking on and wanted to ask here.

Re: Holidays?

  • We actually have it really good when it comes to Holidays.

Thanksgiving-BM usually takes them for lunch and then gives them to us later in the day for us to do a dinner

Christmas-BM does Christmas Eve on the 23 and Christmas day on the 24. Then she gives us the boys for the 24th and 25th.

Birthdays- If it falls on our day then we have them if it falls on her day then she has them. No big deal.

Other holidays-whoever's day it falls on has them unless the other one really wants them. We are all good about working with each other.

  • It is all in the co. Each parent gets every other holiday, and then those holidays alternate. So dh gets certain holidays every even yr, and then the other holidays every odd yr. Holidays override normal days so if it is our day but her holiday she gets ss for the specified times. It's nice to have a co spell everything out, it eliminates any fighting. Sometimes we can mutually agree on alternate things though. Like, bm wanted ss for memorial day but it was dh holiday. We didn't have anything exciting planned so we gave it to her and just switched 4th of July for it. It worked out well.

  • We alternate Thanksgiving and Christmas.  So this year we would have SS for Thanksgiving and BM would have him for Christmas.

And when not overseas, we alternate Christmas with his or my family.  When we have SS, we see his family and when not, we see mine.

However, we are in Germany and that has atlerted any plans.  We shall see if SS goes home for Christmas, since we will not be paying for his plane ticket.

This.  For, Easter, Victoria Day (Memorial Day), Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.  It's a bit weird as some long weekends are included and others are not - but it generally works without messing up the regular rotation too much.  If it works that one parent will not see the kids three weekends in a row due to the holiday schedule, then they have agreed to split the weekend before or after the holiday weekend.

  • We usually split up Thanksgiving and we used to get the kids right after Christmas-the wkend after-but I see Christmas IS on Saturday, so that might be a fun situation...

I think we're pretty flexible for holidays, so not a big deal, but Thanksgiving is typically not an easy one cause I want to go to my mom's and he wants to go to his mom's (and then go hunting), and then organize with the kids' time... We both LOVE Thanksgiving!  Christmas is eh, but DH likes to keep the kids in one place for Christmas Day (ie-BM's house) so they can enjoy it-play w their toys, etc...

  • We have a CO with the standard EO holiday. Things that are not in the CO BM/BF birthdays or the skids birthdays. We will never have SS1 on his actually day of birth unless it falls on a weekend that happens to be our weekend. This really isn't a huge issue though. We have a family birthday party for him the weekend before or after his birthday in which we have him to celebrate.
  • Ugh, I don't even want to think about this year. The holiday season with SD is going to be easier because it's all spelled out in the CO now. But you're right having a blended family within a blended family is difficult. Especially when not only does your DH have a blended family, but your own blended family lives a few hours away and your new LO has his first bday in December. lol! This is going to be interesting this year.

At least we have SD's plans all spelled out in the CO, though. We just have to decide what we're doing exactly, with whose family, when. lol! And decide if we're going to combine Christmas with both sides of my family and DS's birthday all at once.

  • We're like most...one gets Thanksgiving, the other gets Christmas. But whoever has Christmas also has the day after Thanksgiving, and whoever has Thanksgiving also gets Christmas Eve. Christmas is going to be nuts this year...As someone pointed out, it is on a Sat, of our weekend. So we will pick up ss Firday monring (45 min one way) Drop him off Saturday morning for her to have him on Christmas. Pick him up Saturday evening for the rest of our weekend, the take him back Sunday evening. That's four hour and a half long round trips in three days. Luckily DD will still be too young to know she's spending all of Christmas weekend in the car.

  • With my oldest, we did the EO holiday thing in the beginning. As he got older, things kind of switched up and for the most part he picks and chooses where he goes now and his Dad and I are fine with that. For example, I host Tgiving every year so he usually chooses to stay with me. We don't really do anything much for Easter, but his Dad does, so he usually goes there for Easter. Having grown up in a Blended Family myself and now having my own, I know how difficult it can be on the kids trying to see everyone on every holiday. So now, we spread Christmas out and end up celebrating all month long. We have "real" Christmas, Christmas with my Dad's family, Christmas with my Step-Dad's family and then the kids will do Christmas another day with their Dad's family. Christmas day for the little one's will just simply be, well simple. Wake up at my house and open presents, go to their Dad's and open presents and then Christmas dinner.

As for the other holiday's, who knows! LOL I am still working out the Parenting Plan with STBXH.

  • The CO says Dh gets the children in even years on 4th of July, thanksgiving and Christmas day BM gets Eatster, Christmas eve and New Years eve. In Odd years Dh gets Easter, Christmas Eve and New years eve and BM will get 4th of July, thanksgiving and Christmas day.

As far as splitting up the holidays between my family and his we have the same schedule each year. DH's parents are generally on vacation for easter so we go to my family's. Thanksgiving with my family at 3, with his family at 6. Christmas Eve morning with my parents(when we have the children for christmas eve) Church and Christmas eve Dinner with Dh's parents. Christmas morning with just US then to my parents, then my family party (noon or 1pm) then his family at 4pm.

Then we try and plan out extended family parties around each other and work out with BM whose parties are at what time and who can have the kids when. (It normally works out unless she is being jealous)
