Hawaii Babies

NT scan complete

Today we did our NT scan and the neck fold was 1.5-2.0 she did it multiple times. The counselor prior to the scan said they want it less than 1 and then I researched when I got home and read that less than 3 is considered normal. Either way, they have to combine it with the results of my lab work that was also done today.

Good news is that baby appears to have 10 little fingers and 10 little toes! I asked her to count them and she should me too. Baby kept covering his face up. (I say he because I keep feeling like it's a boy). DH of course asked her to try to tell the sex and the tubricle (I think that's what they call it) was pointing up so she said likely a boy. I thought it was funny and told him MULTIPLE times that it's inaccurate until the gender/anatomy ultrasound later... silly boys!

Re: NT scan complete

  • I'm glad that your app went pretty well! Don't let yourself get worked up over this NT scan. Mine was at 2.2 and with the blood test results, I got a 1/30 chance of baby having DS. I was such a mess for almost a month. When I was far enough along to get the amnio I did and it showed the LO was just fine. I wasted a month of my pregnancy being so upset and I'm wondering if all those bad hormones I was having made Ryan the fuss bucket he used to be (probably not). I also wonder if that contributed to my PPD and my trouble bonding to him at first?

Soooo many people freak out like me, don't be one of them!

  • What great news!

I have mine on the 20th and I have to admit, I'm a nervous nelly.  Although I don't anticipate anything to be wrong, you just never know and unfortunatly I always think of the negative :(

Congrats on everything coming out perfect! :)  What a relief!

  • Great news, Sarah!

Now that I think of it, I never had an NT scan.  Is that a pretty routine test?  I remember hearing about it before TTC, but totally forgot about it after our BFP.  My doctor never offered it to us, although I did have the quad marker screening done.

My doctor offered it, but another reason why I wanted it was to get an ultrasound that looked like a real baby rather than just a little bean :)

maybe it's for higher risk individuals?  I can't remember, but I know it was offered to me due to my "advanced maternal age" of 35.

  • Nicole,

It's offered here but you can take it or refuse it. Some insurances don't even cover it. Ours does for the most part. It's worth it in my eyes, especially considering Bella's hand and I wanted to see this baby's hands and feet BEFORE the 20 week since our 20 week last night was an upper and then instantly a downer. I wanted to be as prepared as much as I could this time so the 20 week could be a positive experience for us. It wouldn't have mattered either way but then it wouldn't have been the upper of finding out and then the downer of negative news too...

I won't have the quad marker, just one more blood test for spina bifida is all I need.

I won't lie, it was also SO fun to see the LO moving around and to SEE the heartbeat again. It was so cute! It went from a tiny peanut at 6 weeks and 5 days to now, 6 weeks later. The only thing they didn't say was the weight, I like to know that :)

  • sounds good!  LOL @ your DH!

I told the genetic counselor that if it came to the amnio that I didn't think I would do it. Since I had the m/c in April, I don't think I'd even want to risk the 1% of it causing a m/c... I don't think I could chance it for my sanity! I was upset that they don't say ANYTHING to you after the scan, just "here's some pictures you'll get your results in a week"... ugh ok! I told my best friend that I wasn't going to get worked up over it and I'm not...

I feel bad that you had PPD, I'm actually surprised that I didn't because Bella was a very fussy baby in the early months (about 1-3 months) mostly in the evening and I finally figured out (after quite sometime) that carrying her in the sling/moby was the best way to keep her quiet for the longest period of time.  I also got headlice from DH's aunt when B was 1 month old! Talk about an emotional trainwreck! Are you feeling better now that he's sleeping better?

  • Great news! I wouldn't worry to much about a 1.5 - I think the reason your counselor probably said they prefer it under 1 is because then the results are still normal even with a significant margin of error in either direction. Smile
  • hi hi hi sarah!

i'm with everyone else. they have to take it all into consideration with the blood tests too...

i just had my nt and 1st tri blood test last week and got my results today =)

thanks for posting about the gender thing. the lady predicted the gender but we didn't want to say anything to anyone. i looked up what you posted and it makes sense. =) the tuberacle or whatever it's called. =)

nicole: yeah, they used to offer it to moms 35+ or high risk, from what i gather. but now doctors are starting to offer it to everyone. our insurance covered it 100% so we said why not.

it was really really fun! =)

  • Glad to hear you got to see the baby's 10 fingers and 10 toes! =) How cute! I wouldn't worry too much about the fold, but I hope your lab results will reinforce that you have nothing to worry about =)

  • yay for 10 little fingers and 10 little toes!! :) i would not worry about anything until you get the results back. we opted not to do the NT scan b/c we would have had to pay OOP and we had no family history of birth defects to worry about (plus we would not have done anything about it if they saw something bad).....there are +'s and -'s to doing it and i don't think there is a right or wrong, just depends on the couple and i totally understand why you wanted to do it :)
