Potty Training

how do you get them to relax about poo?

DS pees on the potty pretty well, telling us at least 50-60% of the time, having accidents maybe 30%, and going when we put him on the rest of the time. I'm happy with that at the mo. But poos are a completely different story. He used to go every day, sometimes twice. Now we're lucky to get two days in a row, and after 2 days it becomes a huge production - and never on the potty, always in his pants, or occasionally in the bath (though he tries not to now as he knows it's for the potty - it just confuses and stresses him).

His last 2 poos have been long drawn-out and very anxious affairs of him tellin gme pee-pee every 5 min, refusing the potty, saying he needs a poo, but getting so upset. I have tried reassuring him and cuddling him (telling him to relax, or to push thru his bottom, or that everyone poos), tried television to distract him, etc, but nothing seems to help.

Any advice? I dont' necessarily mind that he's having poo accidents, but would like him to be more relaxed about it generally - and obviously ultimately go in the potty.

Re: how do you get them to relax about poo?

  • I would love to know! DD was doing well too, not thrilled about poop on the potty, but not freaking about it either. The last few days she is running around screaming holding her butt and screaming bloody murder when I try to get her to sit down. She screams if she poops in her panties too.

I think this is a common problem, so I hope someone has the answer!

  • Same thing here. Screaming, holding her butt, off and on the potty 5 times,  will sit there sometimes until right when shes going to go and then jumps up and poops on the floor. Shes doing great with pee. Help!!
  • I'm sure this will not be the case for everyone, but I gave DD some apple juice today to see if it would help with her screaming poop. This morning, still had the issue, then when she went this afternoon, it was softer, and MUCH less dramatic!

    Worth a shot....

I think she may have been withholding a bit, so that may have been making her a little constipated.

  • I tried the juice yesterday and still had the same problem but I think I'm going to start fiber gummies until shes over this stage.
