Success after IF

disappointed after 5 week 1 day u/s....

i am so disappointed - I guess the doctor saw a gestational sac, but I didn't see anything distinguishable - it was so fuzzy. It wasn't my regular doc, but yet again another resident/fellow - they measured the sac about about 6x4mm. I googled and it said that a 6-12 mm sac is the norm in 5 weeks...I was hoping to at least see a very clear g-sac, a yolk sac and a fetal pole  - but i guess it's still too early....

still - I was hoping for a much clearer picture....I am worried they were just making something up....still waiting on the b/w....

I go back in 2 weeks at 7weeks for another u/s..... <sigh> - just not what I expected to feel today....

Re: disappointed after 5 week 1 day u/s....

  • Don't get too upset. My first u/s was at 6 weeks and they barely saw anything. They *said* they saw a yolk sac, but I sure didn't see it, and there was no fetal pole. And my dates were not off, I knew my dates because we did IVF. Anyway, my point is that this early, it's just a good thing to see a gestational sac and in the right spot. I wish you all the best with you b/w and next u/s!

  • Try not to worry - like pp said - 5w1d is really early.  And doctors don't make stuff up.  Promise.

  • I agree wtih everyone else - the 5w u/s will never be clear!  BUT you don;t need to worry about a thing!  Take it from me - they would have told you if they saw something wrong and they are NOT making it up - I can promise you that!
    Hang in there :)

And with the delivery trifecra of one twin vaginal, one c-section with general anesthesia for twin B, Spencer and Sidney joined us at 35 weeks exactly on June 18.

  • This is very normal.  I had 3 u/s (including one in the ER after spotting/cramping) before we finally got something that let us know: your baby is doing good.  It just is too early.  At 6 wks the heart starts beating and that is when it really is noticible all is okay on u/s.

How did your beta #'s come out today?

  • The only thing that would have truly been disappointing is if the doctor saw nothing.  Be glad they saw a sac.  Nothing is really clear at this point to the untrained eye.  At your 7 week they'll see a blob (the baby) and a flicker (the heart).  Even that won't be too clear.  But it seems like everything is growing the way it should, and that should make you happy for the next two weeks.

    Congratulations!

  • You will see all of that in the next few weeks.  I had my first ultrasound at 5 weeks and a couple of days too.  You could see the gestational sac and you could sort of kind of tell that something was inside of it but that's all you could see.  I think mine measured under what I thought it would measure also.  But all is fine now and you're probably fine too!!  =)

  • Don't worry.  They didn't even SEE one of my babies' gestational sacs at 5w2d.  At all.
  • It IS WAAAYYY to early to see something clear! My first U/s at 5w3s showed only an empty sac (and we did IVF so there was no way we had our dates wrong!)

I think thing are going fine for you... the sac is in the right place... that is step one!

the next 2 weeks are going to be forever, but so far so good! You are pregnant!

  • Don't be disappointed.  You're still very early and things are progressing.  You'll see much more at your next appt!
  • Thanks for the reassurance all! My numbers today were:

    HCG: 2640 (22 days post O)

    Progesterone: 15.8

The doc said these were good numbers.

And this is silly - but I was a tiny bit disappointed there was only one sac - I've always wanted boy/girl twins. Who knows, maybe one is still hiding in there. Not that I'm not happy about this one little bean!

  • My first ultrasound was at 5 weeks 4 days....Not sure if you remember the fiasco from my blog...but all we saw was the sack..and remember I started gushing blood right after? They sent me to the imaging center and "maybe" saw the yolk sack..but it was so small and so blurry they couldn't make anything out for sure...3 days later they saw the yolk sack and the sack but still not HB...fast fwd to 7 weeks and we saw a nice string heartbeat.

It's still really early. Try to stay positive. I know it's hard. I have totally been here. ?

  • Why on earth would you be disappointed?  At a 5w1d U/S you really only see a gestational sac (and maybe, just maybe the signs of a yolk sac).

It is not even possible to see a "very clear g-sac, a yolk sac and a fetal pole" as you wrote above at 5w1d.
