new jobs and TTC

Anyone continue to TTC while applying for new jobs? I'll probably find out in the next week or 2 whether I got a job I applied for in Denver. If I get it, I'm thinking I should probably wait 3-4 months to TTC. Don't really want to, but it seems like the right thing to do. If you were in my situation, what did you do?

Re: new jobs and TTC

  • It's not really the same because it is the same company...just different Divisions/State/Project...but I did not stop TTC while applying to the job I'm at right now...in fact that about when we started. I always figured, by the time I get to have the baby we'll figure out what to do...it's not like they can fire you because you are pregnant.

  • I have a friend who is actively TTC and just started a new job. She was wondering the same thing but ultimately decided that this was the time for her & her H to TTC and hopefully have babies... so, she's going ahead with TTC and hoping for the best.

I feel like things are never going to perfectly align. There's always going to be something... if you feel like this is the right time for kids then you should just keep trying.

  • We waited.  But, we were both looking for jobs so we didn't have anything but COBRA insurance.  If one of us were on the job hunt and the other was carrying insurance, we'd probably have continued TTC.

  • The only reason I can think of to wait is if it will be a while before you get all your benefits at your new job. I had a friend who waited because I think it was a year before she could take PTO, so she wanted to have the baby after she had been there a year.

This was my plan but the job thing didn't work out (related to grad school taking too long).  You can't take the family medical leave act until you've been working at that job for at least 1 year according to the federal government and I wanted it as an option if I needed to take that much time.  So we were planning on me staying on the pill the first 3 months or so on the new job, then going off for a month or two, then actively trying.  Then again there's never a "good" time to have a kid.

That's the big thing I'm considering waiting for if I get an offer- to qualify for FMLA. But maybe I won't get that lucky and either won't get pregnant fast enough or won't get the job offer so this won't even be an issue :) Actually, if I do get the offer I may have to live apart from DH for a month or so, so maybe it will end up being easy to take a TTC break!

  • I was actively looking while TTC, but I was also in a job I was happy with and willing to stay. Had I found my new job before getting pg I would have waiting 3-4 months to be eligible for their mat benefits and FMLA. I started my new job at 17 weeks pg and had to negotiate unpaid leave/etc. Also I would assume if you are actively trying without a job that you are under your DH's health insurance? I guess you have to look at that as well as if you are planning on returning to work, if you are not then those things probably won't matter to you, nor would carrying their insurance.

Should have mentioned - I'm on my DH's insurance and he's relocating within the same company so we'll remain on it. That's not an issue. I'm also completely fine with 100% unpaid leave, so I guess my only concern would be if the new job wouldn't even want to give me that. I'm not sure how friendly companies usually are about that sort of thing.

Well, with this being said, I wouldn't wait.  And maybe that's the "wrong" decision, but, you never know how long it will take to conceive.  If you're ready now, start trying....you never know what can happen.  (And I mean that in a good way too!)

Thanks for exactly the advice I wanted ;)

I've applied for a position with a school district - these people must like kids right??? I should know more in a week or so. I can't believe I'm going through this job search process again so soon.
