Infertility

Question for ladies with MFI/unknown cause

Did any of your DHs have hormone levels checked and have testosterone come back low?

We got a copy of DHs results when we went in to see the dr for a sleep issue with DH (he has bad apnea).  The nurse brought them into the room so I asked to see them.

Everything was normal, except Testo was low and prolactin was high.

RE said he would review next week and to call on Tuesday (he went home sick after he saw us).

I am REALLLLLLLYYYYY hoping this means DH might have a fixable problem and we don't have to do IVF after all.

But, please tell me why we didn't have this testing done when he first had a low SA?????  That is a little irritating...

Re: Question for ladies with MFI/unknown cause

  • Hi,

I'm in a similar situation... First RE we saw never even pursued any further testing with DH and just said IVF is our only option.  Second opinion RE that we saw this summer did test my DH and he also has low testosterone.  He's been taking clomid for 2 months, 1 more to go = 3 mo total appx... We will go back in October to see if it made a difference... I'm not very hopeful but we'll see!!  I'll keep you posted.

  • I know in some cases, males can be put on Clomid if they have a low count and low hormone levels, I think just testosterone. I have a friend who had that issue and his count increased tremendously, along with him feeling better overall and having a ton of energy, and she was able to get pg with IUI #1.

That is AWESOME.  I really hope that is the case with us.  It would be so nice if it is an "easy" fix!

I feel like hope has been restored a little today!

Definitely keep me posted on what you find out Bear!

  • Yes that was the case with MH.  He went on clomid and it did help his count quite a bit but it also decreased the motility quite a bit.

So overall his count posh ended up being almost exactly the same, even those his count went from 16 million to 33 million but motility was down to 10%

I do know other though that had huge jumps and not such bad impacts on motility so I would def. consider it.  We didn't wait the full 90 days either so it could be even higher now.

  • Yes we actually found out that DH had low testoterone before he did the SA.  He is seeing a urologist that specializes in make infertility and he put DH on HCG injections 3 times a week and Arimidex which is actually a breast cancer drug.  He has been on this treatment plan for a month and half now.  They will do a repeat SA at 3 months so I am really hoping this helps enough for us to try naturally or just do IUI.

  • Hi,

My DH was dx w/ low sperm count and low testosterone back in March by a urologist. The uro told us to go see an RE, so in April we went to the RE and he put DH on clomid. We didn't wait any time before doing an IUI. His first counts a month after clomid were the same as his original SA which was 2 million. Second IUI it was up to 4 million and the last IUI was 6 million. Were about to do our 4th IUI and I'm nervous about his counts. This will be our last IUI before going to IVF unless his counts are a lot higher.

After 3 years of infertility we were blessed with twin girls through private infant adoption.

  • Hope you dont mind me posting....

My DH had very very low testosterone (lower than a females level!) and his uro first put him on clomid. He was going to try arimidex, but after his other labs came in he decided to go with the clomid. He took it for a few months and saw absolutly no improvement in his testosterone, or his SA results. He then switched him to HCG injects 3 x per week and we knew within weeks that it was working (with his testosterone at least!) and sure enough after 3-4 months on it, his testosterone was in a normal level and his SA results improved enough to try IUI's (we were previously on the IVF route). # 3 worked!

best of luck to you!! There are so many options to try and hopefully something does the trick!
