Baby Names

Calynn - best spelling?

I am all over the place with my baby names list.. I've once again come across another name that might be perfect for our baby girl.

My DH's fathers name was (he passed away in 2006) Calvin and my fathers name is Lynn.

I really like the name Calynn. I think it's a nice combo of both of their names. I wanted to get your input on the spelling..

Some different options I've found online:

Calynn
Calyn
Callan
Callen
Callon

WDYT?

Re: Calynn - best spelling?

  • I like the idea of honoring your fathers, but the sound of that name seems so masculine for a little girl.

Do you know for sure you're having a girl? Are you planning on having any more children?

Calvin Lynn sounds like a great name to hang onto for a son.

Otherwise, I like Callie Lynn for a girl.

If you're dead-set on this name....I don't know which to tell you. Callan, Callen, and Callon all look like boys' names. Calynn and Calyn look cre8tive. I suppose Calyn is the least bad.

  • I think it's nice. I like that it has meaning to you.  I think you will have people asking how to pronounce it/spell it...but other than that, I think it's a nice name and a nice tribute.

No, we aren't going to find out what the sex of the baby is... The reason I keep posting on girl names is because we are set on our boy name but just can't make up our minds for a girl name.

Thanks for the input. I don't like the idea of people asking her how to pronounce the name, and I really don't want it to look cre8tive....

  • I'd say Callen, just because I don't like the y in the middle of the name, but I guess by doing that you kind of lose the tribute to Lynn.

  • I would also say Callen but you lose the whole point of it being like Lynn if you do that. Therefore I say Callyn, for the following reasons:

    1) The double LL is going to make it more likely that people pronounce it short-A like Calvin rather than long A like the more popular Kaelyn (Caitlin without the T)

    2) Dropping the final N from Lynn makes it more likely that people will pronounce it CAL-lynn (accent on first syllable), rather than Cuh-LYNN (accent on the second).

    3) And though I NEVER say this (like never never never, and I don't even believe in general that Ys "feminize" names), the Y looks more feminine in this case.

  • Sorry, but my advice to you would be to make Calvin the mn choice if it's a boy, and Lynn the mn choice if it's a girl.

I'm not a fan of made up names, especially smushing two names together, even if you have the best intentions (which I realize you do in this case).

Whichever one you don't use for this baby, you will have left in reserve for the next one! Wink He or she may feel left out if his or her older brother or sister gets BOTH grandfather names, and he or she gets none.

  • This is the name we're using if LO is a boy, but we're spelling it Callan.  I actually do like it for a girl, with the nn Callie- for a girl I guess I would spell it Callen.   But I also really like the suggestion of using Callie Lynn.  Why not use Callan if you have a boy?

Everything else kind of looks made up...although it's awesome that you're using a C.

    Love the name Calvin!

  • I have a girlfriend whose name is Kallen.  I have always thought it was pretty and different.

I think Calynn is fine - it truly combines the names in the most genuine way.
