3rd Trimester

what does this mean?

Had doc appt today with 1st internal. He said I'm 1 cm dilated and the baby's head is 40% down. He's head down. Does that last part mean the effacement? He didn't actually use the word effacement so I'm not sure.

Re: what does this mean?

  • I would assume he meant 40% effaced, but I could be wrong. Effacement has to do with the thickness of the cervix so maybe he was referring to the baby's station?? Although I've never heard of station being measured that way. hmmm. Not sure. I'd ask at your next appt if he uses weird lingo again.

  • 40% down?  I would assume maybe the station but not sure.

  • Since he said % I would assume effacement. I dont think they would say 40% station which is the only thing left (dilation, effacement, and station).

But I am not expect either.

  • Station is from -5 to +5, not percentages. I'd say it's your effacement.

You're dilated to 1cm (cervix is open 1cm/ about a fingertip)

You're 40% effaced which means your cervix has thinned/shortened from 100% to about 60%

You're baby is "head down" or engaged. Since he didn't mention a particular station I'm not sure how far down the head is, but it is down there against your cervix.

(I'm not an expert but, BFF is an MA for a women's clinic and I'm studying to be a doula and midwife) HTH.
