Due to statistics, I'm probably not the only one on here that's plus sized and pregnant. Who else is out there and plus sized? I would love to have a board devoted to this but since there isn't one, let's get together here.
Have/did you had/have any complications associated with your weight? Where did/do you buy maternity clothes from? When did you start showing? Any tips or pointers?
Re: Plus sized & pregnant
Plus sized right here!
No complications to speak of (I had no GD/pre-E which are obviously not exclusively for plus size moms but doctors often watch for it a bit closer).
I bought my clothes from Motherhood and Old Navy. Motherhood for pants, ON for tops (and really they had some cute ones in-store back then!).
Honestly, I never really showed that much. I wore a lot of empire waisted tops to make it pretty obvious, but I would say I was about 34-36 weeks before it was obvious that I was pregnant.
I love your post. I am plus size and just got my first BFP yesterday. We have been trying for about 7 months.
I have wondered the same things. I told my husband I wouldn't be showing until 8 months and he just laughed. I have looked online and did find some sites for plus size maternity but don't remember where they were. I think if you google it you should be able to find something. But if you're anything like me then you want to be able to try things on. In that case, I haven't found that out yet.
Good luck and keep me posted.
Well I was 210 before I got pregnant but know I think I weight like 198 or something...lol! I lost a lot of weight due to m/s.
My doctor did have me do an early diabetes test just to make sure (negative) and I am getting another one at 20 some weeks where it is done normally. I've been buying my clothes at Ross and Kohls so far, I've also bought a dress online for an upcoming wedding and I'm hoping it fits
I'm 13 weeks now and my skin feels tighter around my waist so I'm starting to look pregnant now, and no its not all fat haha
Me!
With my 2 kids, I was induced due to HPB.
This time around, I'm sad to say that I'm at my highest weight ever, and am walking into this thing with high blood pressure.
My goal is to really watch it and take care of myself with this pregnancy so it will go as smooth as possible.
I never really wore maternity clothes, but I may have to this time. My job won't allow me to waltz in wearing old sweats.
I did not have any weight-related complications with my last pregnancy, and I'm hoping to be as lucky this time around.
I bought my maternity clothes from Motherhood, since they were the only ones that carried my size at the time, but other stores have started to carry it now so I'll probably get some things at Pennies too.
I didn't really start showing to the point where strangers could tell until about 32 weeks, but it was obvious to close family and friends around 26 weeks.
my angel babies: 6/10 (chem. pg), 9/10 @ 10 weeks
Lurking from sept. babies here, but I thought I could help. I'm a week away, so I've been there. I'm quite large, size 22/24 or bigger and had the same worries as you. I've had a more than textbook pregnancy! It was actually almost easy until about week 34-36 when he dropped.
No high bp, no gd, no real physical problems (I actually come with pre-existing back and foot trouble, but have been fine!) If anything, the relaxin during pregnancy may have helped my 3 bulging disks in my back! The worst part is probably the lack of sleep...peeing 4-6 times a night for about 9 months now. I actually feel like I may get more sleep after he comes!
I haven't really needed many maternity clothes, since it was summer when I was biggest. I just bought a size up if necessary, really comfy, stretchy clothes. I did inherit a few items from a couple of friends from Motherhood Maternity (not in the stores, don't have much in the line of plus sizes.) I didn't really start showing until at least 30-33 weeks, REALLY showing the last 3, but someone not knowing I'm pregnant would probablly assume I'm just REALLY fat! That part kinda sucks, but I just blab to everyone that I'm pregnant. Haven't really gotten any negativity or strange looks.
I am pretty uncomfortable the last few weeks, but feel like an idiot complaining because I've had absolutely nothing to complain about until only recently! Relax, enjoy, tell everyone, don't listen to negativity. Let me know if you want more!
I'm plus size and pregnant. I've actually lost weight since we found out. Just nauseau and my appetite has shrunk. Had my first appointment today. Everything is nice and healthy.
I'm plus size, I think I am about a size 20, just got my BFP a week ago.
As far as maternity clothes go, I have no idea lol. I have been looking online but I have an extra problem in that I am 5'11" and so all my pants have to be long inseams. It's a pain in the butt to find plus size maternity, let alone tall plus size maternity. I think I may have to buy bigger regular pants and use a bella band. I've always had really large boobs and have come to terms with buying larger tops to fit my chest even if it makes me look bigger, so that really wont be an issue I don't think.
As far as medical issues, I had high blood pressure for years but have not been on meds for the past 3 years, ever since I had gastric bypass surgery. I am sure my doctor will test me for it again and again though as it runs in my family. I also have issues with vitamin absorption which means even more frequent testing to make sure baby has all the nutrients it needs.
I plan on gaining the absolute minimum weight I need to. I am already big enough and I know that can cause problems so I don't want to make it worse by eating lots and gaining lots as well. I have been focusing on more healthy foods and cutting out bad and or fatty foods.
Best of luck to you, H&H 9!
IRRC, Motherhood comes in Tall and Petite sizes in the plus sized section.
oh as far as maternity clothes I haven't bought any yet. My pants still fit (I'm a size 18/20 sometimes 22). I'm going to go to Motherhood and Pennies. It sucks that Lane Bryant stopped carrying maternity.
My biggest concern are getting bras that fit. I have to go to a specialty store to get measured properly and the right bra. I'm a 40 (H or I depending on the bra).
I am plus sized and pregnant as well. I am only about 12 weeks so I am not in maternity cloths yet but i do plan on shopping a JC Penny.
Legal Lady...just so you know JC Penny's carries plus sized maternity talls. Most of their pants come in tall.
I am plus size as well, although I lost 30 pounds right before conceiving on Weight Watchers.
My belly is normally small enough that it looks psuedo-flat since I've lost weight -- most of my weight is in my butt, boobs, shoulders, arms, and neck -- so I expect I will probably "show" -- at least, my husband insists that I am "curvy, not fat," and that it will be obvious I am pregnant. I hope so!
But I have found that even though I am bloated right now (belly bigger on some days but only gained 3 pounds so far), I can wear my old pants because they are now big from losing weight anyway
I don't plan on having to buy maternity stuff for a while for that reason, except maybe shirts, just to emphasize the "pregnant, not fat" thing.
I did the one-hour screen for GD, and I was borderline, so I am going for the three-hour tomorrow. My glucose was 89 two months before I conceived, so there has definitely been a jump. I also have PCOS, which doesn't help. I'm hoping the three-hour comes out OK...for now.
Oh really? Thanks! I'll check it out!
Hello, Im plus size and pregnant, im a size 12. I havent had any medical issues *(knocks on wood)*, and ive actually lost 7pds associated with MS. Ive bought some maternity clothes shirts, and i bought them from Target and Faith 21(forever 21's plus size line). Im going on 3mths and im not technically "showing" but my stomach is pretty bloated and the boobs are ENLARGED to say the least.. LOL! Tips: depending on what size you are you may want to buy "shift clothes" = clothes that are a size or two larger for growth or maybe even a belly band. Hope this was somewhat helpful.

I'm plus sized. As you can see from my ticker, we're just starting out on this journey and I only got my BFP yesterday. But I'm excited to say what other curvy ladies are saying.
I discovered during the 2 week wait that about 80% of my shirts still fit with a large throw pillow tucked under them. (Can you tell I had babies on the brain?) So I plan to wear my current shirts as long as possible, but look for new maternity jeans. I'm lucky since I work in a very casual office and everyone from our CEO downs wears jeans and casual clothes every day.
I started out both pregnancies at size 16. I've had borderline high blood pressure from before I got pregnant. My RE had put me on meds for it because she wanted "good blood flow to the ute". So I've been on those ever since.
last time I got GD in the 3rd tri. My blood pressure has been watched super closely. I have to take it at home 2x's a day and log it - and take my log to dr. appts for them to look over.
I started NST's last pregnancy at 32w. All was fine for the first couple weeks - but around week 34/35 I kept getting sent to L&D to be monitored because in those last weeks I was super swollen and my BP was really high. Finally, at 38w6d, my NST got me sent to L&D (yet again), After monitoring all parts of me (baby, bloodwork, urine), they said I was a pre-e "ticking time bomb" and they needed to induce that day.

I'm plus sized, wearing between a 14 and 18, depending on the clothing item. I don't know when to expect that I will start showing, but I'm going to bet that it won't be for another 6-8 weeks. I guess we'll see.
I am Plus sized and pregnant. No complications so far. I've gained one pound and trying to not gain too much. I can feel my stomach getting hard behind my belly button but I doubt I will show for a long time.
I have one pair of jeans that is getting tight in the waist but they were my smallest ones anyway...the rest of my clothes are fitting fine. I will play it by ear on the maternity clothes front but plan on shopping at Motherhood (tall plus) and Old navy.
Fellow "fluffy" girl here.
Great timing on this post - because I just started to foray into trying to find some maternity clothes. I am about a size 16 or 18, depending on the store. At this point, I know 3 things for sure:
1) I really don't want any of these clothes that are meant to be tight to show off the cute little bump because at a larger size (and now, carrying twins) there will most likely be nothing cute about it. An empire waist and/or smocked bust area in a nice fabric is not too much to ask for, is it? Apparently, it is.
2) The designers for plus maternity clothes think we are all about 70 and gave up on looking cute. Um, hello - we did get pregnant, so someone out there must find us attractive. Yes, I am talking to you, myopic designers, who think that only the women size 2 pre-pregnancy deserve to feel pretty when they are feeling like a boat before they propagate the species.
3) Regular XL sizes may be ok for some things, but apparently the arms or bust are a bit snug on me.
I tried Kohls, but there was nothing even remotely flattering or not matronly. So, today, I ordered some items on Motherhood Maternity, and will see if they work.
As far as health - I have been great. No blood pressure issues, pretty good energy level, no m/s, and really, overall, nothing to worry about. Still - I am struggling with the new pregnant mindset that gaining weight is OK now and not what I have been fighting for so long. It really does feel foreign to be happy when the scale goes up a pound or so, you now? I should add that I am 41, almost 42 too (and pregnant with my first), and still - nothing seems to be too much of a concern. {knocking anything made of wood in a mile radius of me}
I know I am not 1st tri ~ I am still plus size. I started out @ 22-24. I am 5'10 & I am wearing a pair of maternity jeans today from Old Navy & I have to roll them up, they are that long.
I am showing with this one. It is very obvious that I have a baby bump. I haven't gained any weight with this pregnancy...woo hoo. With DD, I gained over 60 pounds & ended up with pre-e @ the end. I also showed with DD.
I have had good luck with the maternity clothes from ON & Motherhood. I have winter stuff from DD that was from Lane Bryant (back when they carried maternity,).
I'm fluffy- depending on the brand and time of month, I could wear a size 12/14/16- 38D bra size, I'm short 5 foot 2 and weigh 185 lbs. Anyway, I can buy and wear standard maternity clothes from any store- my faves were: Motherhood, Old Navy, JCPenny, Ross, Kohl's.
I start showing EARLY. With baby#1, I needed maternity wear at 10w, baby #2 at 8w, and at only 4w, my pants are tight yet I haven't gained an ounce of weight... At 20 weeks I look like a "thin girl at 40w!"
I have maternal "pre-hypertension" but do NOT require meds for it. NO GD, but I did however, get pre-e and NEEDED meds w/baby #1. I was put on bedreset at 32 weeks and induced at 37w- which ended in an emergency c-section. I went from 170lbs. to 225lbs.
With baby #2 I was still on the HBP meds throughout the entire PG and did NOT get GD or Pre-E. I didn't lose I went into spontaneous labor, had a TOL and attempted a VBAC- it failed and I had a crash c-section and baby in NICU for 12 days. Didn't lose all the baby weight so I went from 206 lbs. to 225 lbs.
With baby #3, I lost ALL my baby weight from DS#2 and did NOT need HBP meds currently. I'm starting this PG out at 185. Hopefully I won't need drugs and I won't get GD or Pre-E. I'm scheduling a c-section.
I find since I carry my fat in my belly, u/s seem "hard" for the techs I"ve had- they've had to push really hard and it's actually caused some pain before! Besides that, no other issues being plus sized and PG!
I'm a plus girl too
size 18
I agree that we should have our own board! Just sayin!
No problems r/t being overweight at this point, but I'm just over 6 weeks. We got pregnant the first month we tried (and I worried lots prior thinking we would have trouble due to my weight).
I'm plus sized (pre-pregnancy size 20/22). My first pregnancy was fairly uncomplicated. My Dr diagnosed me with GD the first time around, but I disagree with his diagnosis (I was almost a month past the general testing date, ended up getting violently ill the next week with the stomach flu, AND only failed by 2-3 points total).
As for maternity clothes, I didn't like Motherhood's quality, so I will stick with Old Navy and Target like last time. Last time I didn't show until around 7 months, and generally felt like most people just assumed that I had gained weight.
Thank you so much for posting this. I've heard people say how great their nursing tanks were but I thought there was no way they'd work for big chests (I'm usually a DDD). I'm definitely going to try them now!
I had little complications with my DD. This time I'm a little heavier, so I'm nervous. I'm trying to stay active and eat healthy. Hopefully I can keep the GD away along with the high bp.
Towards the end of my first pregnancy I had trouble finding clothes that fit. I live in a small town and only a few stores have maternity clothes, and none have plus size.
I am 5'6 and 238 pounds. I was recently diagnosed with insulin resistance/pcos and I actually have pretty good blood pressure surprisingly, I am usually around 100/70 or a little lower. I got pregnant about 2 months after my insulin resistence diagnosis. My husband and I had been trying for almost a year and it was obvious (I was charting) that I was NOT ovulating regularly. I went on metformin, lost almost 20 pounds and bam! I got pregnant. I do realize tho that not everyone has it like this and for some the metformin doesn't do the trick.
I am also kinda a odd one right now because while I am only expecting one baby, I am already experiencing horrible bloat that has me wearing maternity clothes (the beband from target doesnt fit right and I didnt want to even try and bother with the bella band) and the fact that I've gone from a 42 DD to a 46 F in a little over a month.
My 2 pairs of maternity pants and the 2 tshirts and 1 top I have, have all come from motherhood maternity. I wish the panel was a *bit* tighter but I know that'll change once I get farther along. I like the look of the old navy maternity clothes but we do not have one nearby that has a maternity section so I won't be getting anything from there until I can try it on in person (I hate ordering clothes online) .
