Babies: 9 - 12 Months

BF moms, Food allergy question

OK I don't BF but my friend does & her baby is 2 months old. Her pedi said to cut out milk, soy, eggs & nuts from her diet to see if that is what is causing her baby to have eczema.

Now does that mean everything cooked with milk & eggs too or just like a scrambled egg, glass of milk.  Stuff like that.

I told her I thought it meant all or nothing, but she is under the impression that like cookies made with eggs & milk & those types of minimal dairy products like that are ok.

What did you do & any tips to make it a bit easier or a website to help her?

 Thanks!

  • I EBF and my diet never affected DS's excema, what helps is moisturizing him every night after his bath with Cetaphil, avoiding swimming pools and keeping a humidifier in his room.

  • We don't have issues with food allergies, but I know someone that does. Her daughter's eczema is so bad that she has to cut EVERY morsel of soy, milk, eggs, and nuts from her diet. Her diet is very, very limited. Even finding bread that she could eat was a challenge. God bless her, she's still determined to BF for a year. That's sacrifice!

  • My friend had allergy issues with her breastfed daughter.  She cut out everything that had any type of dairy product.  She said it really limited what she could eat.  I'm sorry, I do not know what resources she used.  I just know that she read the labels on EVERYTHING.

  • I cut dairy and soy from my diet, and I included everything - dairy is hidden in SO many things, and if it doesn't have dairy in it, it probably has soy.

I just googled dairy free, and got a few websites - I found it was easiest just to read the labels, look for the allergen warnings, but double check the ingredients.

I would encourage her to eliminate all possible allergens from her diet, then she will be able to see for certain if it makes a difference or not.

I was able to start reintroducing dairy at 6 months, and we're going well so far!  Hope this helps!

  • It means everything. Eczema can be so many different things (diet, contact dermatitis, etc) that it seems strange to do diet restrictions if that's the only symptom. But all hidden soy/dairy/eggs need to go as well because the protiens are still there and that's what causes the reaction. It's really tough, but doable, and if it makes her baby feel better, 100% worth it.

  • thanks ladies!  I will give her all this info!!
  • When I BF my oldest I cut milk, soy and eggs from my diet.  I included all "hidden" sources as well.  Have her try a local health food store.  They have a lot of vegan options that worked for us.  Our Target also has a good selection of goat's milk cheese and some other milk free products.

If she searches "How to read a label for a XXX (milk, egg, soy, nut) free diet"  she will be able to find all the terms that indicate an allergen is present in the food.  It's not always clear on some labels.

    Good luck to her!

  • I went with a total elimination diet when DS was about 4-5 months old.  I cut all "hidden" sources of dairy, soy, egg, etc. as well.  It is the most effective approach, but it's a huge sacrifice.  I'm not sure I would have done it just for DS's eczema.  He also had blood and mucous in his stools, which all cleared up on the elimination diet.  It just depends on how aggressive of an approach she wants to take.
  • kellymom.com is the BEST website

I would advise cutting all of it, and if it clears the eczema she can slowly add things back one at a time to see if it stays gone or if one thing in particular is causing it.

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
