As a teacher I have seen some "interesting" names and spellings but my favortie hands down was a poor little girls named Malaria...that right! And the Mom did not realize until after the child was born so she "unoffically" changed the spelling by teaching her daughter to spell it with a y. But since on her SS card, birth certificate it was spelled like the disease that is what we had to use and this PISSED the mom off. We told her what she had to do if she wanted to offically change it but we for leagal reaons had to use the leagal spelling of her name and teacher her to spell it that way. (I used to teach kindergarten. As far as i know the mom never changed it...poor girl. But still makes me laugh to think of her teacher calling to her on the playground really loud "Malaria!!!"

If he or his mother were anything other than blonde/blue, I wouldn't have batted an eyelash. But they both appeared to be very Caucasian and I guess the back story here is that I really think this was a clever NN for a generic name. She was very show-offy about everything regarding the little boy, made sure everyone was watching everything she did, and his name just seemed to be a part of her "act."
And of course, of course I understand that all things are not what they appear. I'm 1/4 Filipino and certainly don't look it. Unique names are fine, everybody gets to name their own kid, blah blah. I just thought it was an odd name and I really got the impression that it was a NN.

Re: They put nametags on the kids at storytime today
Hey stranger!
lol thanksgiving! that is funny.
our friends named their first Vander James. he goes by Van......that's right Van.
it was strange at first but now i see him as Van, not weird to me at all but probably to strangers i am sure.
i guess with names, as weird as they may sound to strangers, to family they associate the personality and do not view the name weird at all.
haha. That is an interesting name.
I love the name Dana btw!
that's not so strange... "Van Wilder" the movie... my dad has a friend named Van (in his 70's).... I like it.
than = not so great to me, though.
Than is a new one to me. Never heard that one before.
holy crap that is awful!

My FIL's name is Van. Not short for anything. And I knew a Thaney in high school, short for Nathanial.
