I can't wear heels?

A co-worker of mine completely chastised me today for wearing high heels while pg.  She said something about it putting too much stress on my uterus and I'm harming my baby by wearing these shoes.  I feel like if this is true I would have heard about it before.  Anyone?

Re: I can't wear heels?

  • Never heard a thing about that.   And I've seen lots of people wear heels while pg... even VERY much pregnant.   The only thing I can think of it hurting is your feet, with extra weight on your feet, it might hurt... or if you're feel were swelling later on.... but other than that it sounds silly... but what do i know... its my first, so i'm pretty clueless at somethings.

  • I haven't heard that.  I know near the end when your have swollen feet and bad balance it's not a good idea but otherwise I assume it's ok.

  • ya i heard after a certain point they advise you not to wear them any more. For me....the though of putting heels on now is dreadful and I used to wear them all the time. I have do buy some cute flats or wedges!

  • Totally untrue and unfounded - I'm wearing heels today.  As long as you're comfortable you are fine.  Later in pregnancy when your feet/ankles swell it might not be easy to wear them - flats may be a better choice.  Esp if you live in a snowy/icy area - you don't want to slip and fall.

  • Thanks ladies.  She was really giving me a hard time about it to the point where I just had to walk away.  I would NEVER in a million years do anything that could potentially cause my baby harm.

They are still comfortable for me now, but I fully anticipate that the day will come when I switch to flats until birth.

Thank you!  I look at it all the time and it usually makes me cry.  It's amazing what is going on in there!

  • I would tell said co-irker where to shove said high heel!  :)  Not true in any way shape or form.  People are dumb.

What I would say is that your balance gets off and your joints (especially hips) get looser later on and you might not feel comfortable wearing them and/or might fall easier.  But you know your body AND it doesn't strain the uterus.

  • When I was in my last couple of months of pregnancy with DS I stopped wearing heels because my balance wasn't as good, but I don't see any reason to stop at this point!

  • That's ridiculous. Heels put no strain whatsoever on the abdomen. I'm wearing 4" heels out to some social events tonight!

  • People really need to learn to STFU!  I was with a bunch of girlfriends this past weekend who've all had babies in the past year.  The other three girls there are all pregnant now and one of the girls who had a baby last year was telling us to not stop wearing heels.  She apparently had some real issues with swelling and she attributed it to wearing flats - which seems funny to me but what do I know.

She actually told me that she was told all of this by her DOCTOR!  I can't wait until my appointment next week to tell my doctor.  I'm sure we'll all get a very good laugh in the exam room!  What bugs me the most is that this woman was getting angry and judgemental about it with me.  Ridiculous!

  • I would have had a hard time not rolling my eyes at her.  Just say "thanks for your concern but I trust my doctors judgment and his/her path for my pregnancy so I'll go with what he/she says."  Then walk away.
