refusing the crib

dd is going through a stage where she wants to sleep anywhere but her crib. it started over the weekend when she was fine at night but the only way i could get her to nap was in our bed. same thing happened sunday and monday.

last night she refused to go down in her crib. but she's not screaming as if she just doesn't want to - she's screaming like someone is beating the crap out of her every time we put her in there. my mother's instinct is to say that she's scared to death. even when we gave up and put her in bed with me she wouldn't calm down until dh came to bed.

we've ferberized her several times, but its just not working. i thought maybe we need to consider converting to the toddler bed, but dh thinks that could be problematic.

any thoughts?

Re: refusing the crib

  • Emmy did the toddler bed at 15 months and we didn't have any issues.

  • I would try the toddler bed and see.  She might just want to do "what you are doing".  I have heard numerous ppl switch to toddler bed with no problems.  (I can't remember how old your DD is)
  • I'd try the toddler bed.  We switched Sarah right at 2 and it was much less of an issue than I anticipated.  I hope her sleep/bed issues resolve soon!

  • We switched K to a toddler bed at 15 months after she broke her crib. Then close to 2 she started refusing to sleep in her bed. It was a twin on the floor so she could get in and out easily. After that we realized she wanted to be in a big bed like us so we put her bed on the rails and have had no issues since then. I would try the toddler bed. The transition for us was really easy.

  • Yeah, I'd switch her. That's how Joe got and we switched him a few months after he turns 2. We went straight for the "Real" bed and bypassed the toddler bed. We've had no major problems, except on occasion where he climbs out of bed and come join us in the den after we had put him to bed....but that's normal.

  • E has been in a twin bed since 16mo with no problems. In fact just last week was the first time she EVER got out of bed in the middle of the night on her own.

Do a trial run. Pull the crib mattress out, toss it on the floor. See how it goes. If you have to put it back in, no big deal.
