Success after IF

"Quints by surprise" question

I've only watched 2 episodes of the show, but I can't figure out . . . what is the "surprise"? Just the fact that they did IUI and ended up with 5? They knew they were going to have 5 before they were born, right?

Just find the title kind of odd. Seems like quints would always be something of a surprise, no?

Oh, and it irks me that the intro is totally almost the same thing as the intro to J and K + 8, just slightly different wording.

This makes it sound like I don't like the show, which I do.

  • The title bugs me too -- but I blame TLC more for that. I looked at their website after the first shows and read that they did an IUI knowing they had 5 mature follicles, so no surprise at all if you ask me. The surprise to me is that their RE let them go forward! But I guess they had 3-4 mature with their first pregnancy and had a singleton.

ETA: another interesting tidbit from the web site is that they used donor sperm both times.

After 20 months, 3 Clomid cycles and 4 IUI cycles, IVF #1 with ICSI = BFP!

Really?  I'll have to check out the show!

Childhood cancer (DH) + chemo + radiation = 0 sperm.
    LO #1 - 1 unmedicated/self-monitored IUI w/ donor sperm.
    LO #2 - 1 m/c, 2 BFNs, 4th IUI worked (unmedicated/self-monitored with new donor sperm).
    Life is beautiful!

  • i find the title ridiculous too....I mean, your doing fertility treatments, I am sure she had monitoring appts. so whats they surprise? You know going in that thats a risk (multiples). I am sure they were surpirsed by 5, but really the title makes it sound like they were spontanious.

i'm sure it's just the TLC people that named it this.  no way the 5 were a surprise to the couple.  but as a viewer it sounds way more interesting if it was a surprise.

I thought of you and Cal when I read that :) Here's the link I read that gives their back history: https://www.joneslife.net/2008/10/how-it-all-began/

I just posted it, but I found the info on the family's personal site, not on a TLC site.

I think they had earlier one-hour specials before they got their series and they went into the IF stuff then.

  • In one of the first episodes they discussed their decision to use donor sperm. I really like the show but dislike TLC. They are totally behind the lame title.
It took over four years to be diagnosed with PCOS. We TTC #1 for 18 months, did 5 rounds of Clomid and finally moved onto IVF...which worked! Throughout our IF journey, we suffered 3 miscarriages. We conceived both DD and DS without treatment.

  • Yeah, the 'by surprise' makes them sound spontaneous. Sorry, if you're doing IUI it's NOT a surprise.

I admit it, I get all judgy on people who go through with pregnancies like that.

They do seem like a nice and happy couple, though, on the episode or two I've seen.

  • On their special, they talk about how his SA detected him having a very low sperm count. Both the little girl and quints are from a sperm donor.

I'm with you on the judgy stuff.  I did, however, watch one of the earlier episodes and it seemed like a one time deal with the same sperm donor of their daughter.   I wonder if they really didn't have a choice if they wanted the same donor for all the kids?  Like if they canceled the IUI b/c of too many follicles that the sperm would be wasted and that would have been their only chance?  Not sure about that as I went straight to IVF and didn't do any IUIs to know the timeline.

  • I cant believe the RE would let them continue the IUI with 5 large follies, after a succesful pregnancy on their first IUI!!
