DH and night feedings...?

If you are not working and DH is, do you handle the night feedings so he can get sleep? Or does he help with night feedings?

Re: DH and night feedings...?

  • Well 5 out of 7 nights H is working, so I take those.  The other 2 nights he'll usually take one of the feedings.  LO usually wakes up around 5am, and sometimes at midnight.  He'll tell me before we go to bed if he's OK with getting up with him.

  • DH would be willing to help as much as needed, but I feel kind of guilty when he's up. I am off work for one year with a portion of my wage paid, so I guess I feel like this is my paid job right now, so I have to deal with it.

Although, as DH says, I have to get rest too, so I am able to care for DS appropriately during the day. Usually we will both get up when DS wakes during the night, DH will change him while I warm the bottle, then I feed and re-settle him and send DH back to bed. That being said, the past 3 nights, I've ended up sleeping with DS on the couch while DH sleeps contently in the bed. DH says he's on the couch tonight and I get to get a good night's sleep! YAY!!

All I can say, is if you need help, ask for it. Even though our husband's have to go to work during the day, we have a job as well, and we are BOTH parent's!! Our children rely on both of us!

  • DH is wonderful and a night owl.  Plus he doesn't go in til 12pm so he usually takes 2 night feedings (if she wants them) and then I take mornings and all day.  A few nights ago he took the whole night and it was wonderful, I told him I wanted that again for my birthday ...lol...

  • since i BF, my husband gives her a bottle around the 10-11 feeding so i can try to get some sleep in (but that rarely happens). i take all the other feedings.  on the weekends, he takes the 2:30-3ish feeding so i get a full 6 hours and it's awesome.

  • I do them. I have 17 days before I go back to work and LOs only BF times will be at night. I'm pretty used to being up now and she's hit or miss for STTN..otherwise its really only once.
  • DH takes the 1 am feeding. I take the 4am one since he gets up at 5:45 for work. We did have it flipped but he woke up to do LO's feeding and never went back to sleep and I felt bad so I switched with him. Plus if I have a hard time getting LO back down it's no biggie since I can take a nap. If DH has a hard time getting LO down at 1 then he'll come get me after 45 minutes so I can take over...it hasn't come to that but I made him promise that he would so he could go back to sleep.

We'll probably keep it the same when I go back to work since I can go in later and can go back to sleep. I'll still wake up and get DS ready for daycare and then DH will take him and I'll start getting ready after they leave.

  • I handle all nights, DH works mon-fri. Our deal is he sleeps during the night and gets up early like around 5 or 6am and takes care of DD until around 8:30am when he gets in the shower, I sleep from that time until DD gets up around 9 sometimes 10... weekends sometimes he stays in bed with me a little later if DD goes to sleep after the 6am feeding if not he gets up with her and goes downstairs so I can sleep, on weekends I sleep a little longer...

  • I EBF and am a SAHM.  DH works, so I do all the night feedings.  Occasionally he'll hear DS before I do and change him and bring him to me in bed for me to nurse him, but I put him back to bed.
  • DH stays up until 11 and then I try to do all the feedings. Sometimes it is every 3 hours but once it was STTN! Sometimes he takes the morning (5 or 6am feeding) if I am feeling really lazy. I have one more month of maternity leave. Once I am back to work we will try to do 50/50.
  • I am BFing and DH will give her a bottle in the evenings, other than that, I do all the feedings.  DH works Mon-Fri, so on the weekends he will often take her downstairs when she wakes up after I feed her and I will sleep in for a couple of hours on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • DH takes 1 feeding a night. With DD, we alternated nights while I was working. If DS only woke once to twice a night, then I would take both feedings. However, DS eats at  11, 1, 3, 5 and 7, so I need all the help I can get.

This is what we do with all feedings. At the 4am feeding I change DS and warm up a bottle and then DH feeds him and they usually spend the rest of the night on the couch. This way we both get a decent amount of sleep, he gets his chunk in the beginning of the night and I get mine in the 2nd half.

  • My DS is doing really well with his sleeping so we really only have one "night" feeding. He goes to sleep around 9 and wakes up for a feeding around 5 am and my DH does this feeling for me so that I can get some extra sleep he has to be at work by 7 so he just stays up once he is done. After that feeding he usually will go back down until about 8 then I take over from there. When we originally started having DH do one night time feeding it was because DS was eating every three hours and that way we could both get at least one longer stretch each night. Now that he is sleeping so well it really works out nicely for me. :)
  • I EBF, so right now it is all me. But DS is up way more than our DD was and I'm finding it hard to function. Something has to change...
  • I BF so he can't do anything anyway.  Sometimes he gets up to change a diaper but I let him sleep generally.  No use having both of us awake when I am home all day anyway.
  • With our first I was off for 3 months, DH got up with every feeding and changed his diaper while I got set up to nurse. I was laid off and decided to become a SAHM when DS was 5 months old. Now with the twins DH gets up and gets me the first one to wake, I change her diaper while he gets bottles warmed. Then he wakes up the second baby and changes her and we feed them. If they don't both settle to sleep after eating I do take over so he can go back to sleep. But I'm not only caring for twin newborns but I'm also chasing after our 2 year old and I don't get to take the naps I did when DS was a baby. I need my sleep every bit as much as he does. :)
