What's the REAL deal about Proactiv??

My last OBGYN told me Proactiv was safe. Unfortunately I had a m/c :(

What's the real story about it? I have a new OB now and won't see her until next week. I have been using and didn't even think about it until I?decided to do an internet search.

?For those Ladies that have asked their OB's about it please come in and let me know what their responses were.

?

I am also worried because I have been using it for the past 7 weeks. Will it harm the fetus? What agony!

Thanks everyone

  • my doc said there isn't enough research to support or say "no" to salycyclic acid.

  • It depends which one you use.

    https://americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/acnetreatment.html

This site says Salicylic Acid is not safe, but benzoyl peroxide is.

I stopped using both, just in case. I use a paste made from baking soda and that seems to work pretty well.

  • I looked at Proactiv and it doesn't list?salycyclic acid.?

Did you all see it on the ingredients list?

  • I know one of their face washes has SA, the other is BP. The repairing lotion is also benzoyl peroxide.

  • When pregnant with dd I brought all my ProActive stuff to my obgyn & had him look at the list of "ingrediants".  He told me several of those things were not potentially good to use while pregnant, mainly b/c they could be harmful when the heart & brain were developing.  Unfortunately I do not remember the list of "bad" ingrediants.

It says it right on the bottle. I can't remember if it's BP or SA.

  • I still use the proactiv cleansing wash and the deep cleansing wash. I do not use the toner or the lotion though. I also a girlfriend who used it throughout her pregnancy and she had a very healthy baby
  • Heather -

I'm looking at the bottles for the renewing cleanser and repairing lotion- there's no listing of?salycyclic acid unless there's another name for it.

I'm looking at active and inactive ingredients.

Is there another name for it? There's no listing under "SA" or "salycyclic acid"

  • Mine doesn't say Salicylic Acid either.  I read that Benzoyl Peroxide is questionable too.  That is was probably fine in small doses (the wash) but wouldn't advise to leave on skin (the gel or whatever it is called).  Of course this is one article and I'm sure there is plenty of evidence that says it is fine.

I actually do not see the cleanser with the salycilic acid on the website. Maybe they stopped making it. The other items contain benzoyl peroxide.

  • The Proactiv three-part system does not contain salicylic acid, only benzoyl peroxide 2.5%.  (For reference, those Oxy etc. spot treatments contain 10% benzoyl peroxide.)

You're going to get vastly different answers to this question: my OB says Proactiv and any form of topical salycillic acid is fine.  I use Proactiv cleanser and toner once per day, and I have been spot treating with the lotion as needed.  I've also used a salicylic acid body wash to help with my new lovely "bacne."  Other OBs, however, tell you not to use either at all when pregnant.

The (minimal) concern with using either, however, are birth defects, so please don't worry yourself about your previous m/c!  The two are not related.

But whatever you do, don't DRINK Proactiv.  ;-)  That's just never a good idea.
