Running Moms-to-be

I ran a lot over the winter and spring, but, after running a 10-miler, my legs demanded I take some time off.  I'd really like to start jogging a little again (I think it would make me feel much better/give me something to do), but I can't seem to find the energy.  Any advice on how to get pumped to run when you feel like taking a nap?  Preworkout snack ideas?  Any advice is appreciated!  Thanks!

(I saw that this month's Runner's World has a feature on Pregnant Running... hopefully it's in my mailbox!)

Re: Running Moms-to-be

  • I ran daily through my entire pregnancy. I always just thought about how good I feel during and after the run to get me out of the door. When I was tired, I promised myself I could turn around after a couple of miles - and then when I was out there, I wanted to keep running anyway.

  • If it makes you feel any better, I didn't start my running up again until 2nd trimester.  I was hoping to train for a 1/2 marathon, but the morning sickness killed me and I think I ran maybe 3-4 times in the 1st trimester.  Once I started up again, though, it went and is going great...had a lot more energy and it has been therapy for me to continue running!  Don't be hard on yourself....you'll have energy again and you'll feel like doing it!  I have loved running through pregnancy!
  • I go ahead and take my little nap, eat dinner, rest for about an hour (and take my pre-natals with dinner) and that seems to give me the energy I need for my jog!
  • Like the PP, I also tell myself I can turn around after 10 minutes if I feel bad, and I always keep going. I also like to run with a friend whenever I can. I'm fortunate that one of my good running buddies is pregnant right now as well, and we run together, which helps immensely. Also, I feel so great after I'm done that I just try to focus on that while I'm running rather than thinking about being tired/aches/pains.

  • I feel so much better, happier, more energetic on days that I run vs days that I don't. It was more of a challenge in first tri, but coming off of marathon training, there was no way I was going to give up running. Go at your most energetic time of day... for me its about an hour after I get out of bed. GL!

  • 1st tri is definitely the hardest in terms of feeling tired and getting motivated.  For me, I have to go first thing in the morning - and knowing how much better I feel after wards helps too!  I think also giving yourself permission to just get out there as opposed to trying to hit a set time goal or something helps.

You are almost to the point where your energy will start to come back.  2nd tri was a breeze for me and running was pretty easy.  3rd tri I still felt great (wasn't tired or anything) but I did have to stop running around 32 weeks as my back/hips suddenly crapped out - so I switched to elliptical.  Also just keep reminding yourself that getting out there now will make for an easier labor and much faster recovery!

  • I enjoy running and have a half in Oct. Need to get some new shoes. Im able to take naps at work, if there are no patients in the ER, for my dept. Swimming is also great and still do spin class and use weights. The hard thing for me is abs,, need to do more on the stability ball.

    Keep running!

  • Remind yourself that running will make labor, delivery and recovery easier. I had to remind myself of this a lot (although I ended up with a c-section, but recovery WAS easier!)...I used to tell myself that 30 minutes of running would take hours off of labor (even if it wasn't true, it got me out the door!). You can also promise yourself that if you go for a run, you can then come home and take a nap.
  • It's not easy and i haven't been running as much. I am slowly getting my energy back because I am getting closer to the 2nd tri. Don't push it. If you're really fatigued, don't do it because your body is telling you something when it's that tired.

I run during lunch because I don't feel like getting up early and I don't have the energy to run after an 8 hr work day. I also have my long runs on Saturday where I run with a group. It helps to run with people to help motivate you. Oh and I am running a full marathon on Oct 17th. I'll be 14 weeks by then.
