? For those who were on BCP

When you stopped taking them did your weight change at all? I was lurking (can't remember where) and someone said that she gained 15lbs when he stopped taking her BCP. I've gained 15-20lbs since starting these BCP 5 years ago (to be fair some of that is from not exercising and eating crappy, but the weight gain started back when I was still very active) so I was hoping that going off BCP will make it easier to drop some lbs. Not to mention I'm tired of taking hormones and am ready to find out what it's like to be off them. What were your experiences? TIA! Oh and I take seasonale if that matters

Re: ? For those who were on BCP

  • Good question! I'd like to know the answer to this too!

Can I add, Did anyone have headaches when they got off of their BCP?

I get really bad headaches right now & usually get them more frequent around AF. I'd like to prepare myself if they are going to get worse!

  • I would actually like to know the answers to those questions also! lol. Although I don't get headaches on a regular basis now, I have heard of people getting them once they stop BC... I wonder if those people were getting them frequently before they went off BC, though?
  • I would like to hear the answers too. I just started back on BC after being off for 6 months. This was the first time I was sans BC in 13 years. I gained 10 lbs and as much as I would like to blame on the pill I think it's probably the post wedding 10 lots of us seem to suffer from. I did have horrible headaches in the 2nd - 4th cycle.
  • I did gain weight, but it wasn't from going off BCP, at least I wouldn't TOTALLY blame it on that.  As far as the headaches go, I've gotten the worst headaches around ovulation time as well as around my period. HTH!
  • I did have headaches for a while afterwards.  I can't remember if I gained weight.  I mean, I KNOW I gained weight, but, I'm not sure it was because of the change in BCP status.

  • I was on WW when I stopped taking the BCP, so I lost weight and can't say for sure if I would have gained had I not been on WW.  I did, however, have awful headaches at various times during my cycle after going off the pill.  Luckily I was only off it for 2 months before getting PG, so I did not have to deal with the headaches for very long.
  • My headaches virtually ended once I STOPPED taking BC. My doc thinks the BC was causing them, so that's been a relief. I can't help with the weight questions, I've weighed the exact same since senior year of HS Embarrassed

Ditto to this! My headaches got some much better off the pill and gone now since pregnant.

  • I'm 4 weeks, 5 days off now.

No weight change, and I haven't noticed any moodiness or anything or headaches.

    What I have had:

My face is oily. 2 weeks after the last pill I had a nice big zit on my nose, and last week DH pointed out a lovely patch of zits on my lower back. That's a first. I'd rather have zits there than more on my face though :)

Random spotting/bleeding and irregular bleeding I've mentioned here starting at about 3 weeks post pill - first a couple days of spotting, then nothing, then what may be a super light, short period with so far 3 days of brown spotting/bleeding following. I expected my periods would be heavy and crampy post bcp. Maybe they still will be and my hormones are out of whack yet.

  • Regarding weight gain, I gained 5 pounds when I went of BCPs, but I attributed it to not caring what I ate since the wedding was over.  I think it was a coincidence, but who knows.

As for the headaches, I suffered from terrible and frequent headaches when I went off BCPs.  (I posted on here asking about it, too :)  I have always been prone to headaches, but I think there was a pretty direct correlation.  I assume that it is due to the shift in horomes in your body.

I also suffered from headaches for a good part of my 2nd tri, which I attributed to hormones as well.

  • I gained about 5-7 pounds when I went off the pill but I blame it more on stress than going off the pill.   I was living apart from DH trying to finish up grad school (2 hours away) so I was cooking for only myself rather than for two on a portable kitchen setup (nice hotplate and convection microwave though).  Didn't make me want to cook something healthy when I could just throw a pizza in the oven.  I was also working long hours (usually 10 hour days on average, but occasionally 12-14 hour days) so I would sometimes go out for dinner because I was tired, hungry, and trying to treat myself for putting in so much work.  Also there was 6 or 7 fast food restaurants on the way to where I was staying which didn't help. Stick out tongue

As for the headaches, I never got bad headaches mid cycle or anything but I know girls that got headaches from the BCP (or so it seemed).  So on that part I think it just depends on what your triggers are for headaches and such.  The friend I'm thinking of eventually got put on seasonale and once she had taken it for a month or two, her headaches got better except for when she actually had her cycle.  So I think the only way you can answer that question is to keep a diary of activities, etc so that way you can go back and see if there's a pattern.

    This.

As for headaches, I had a really bad 2 weeks of headaches a few months ago...but nothing out of the ordinary since then.  I also have been getting more random pimples on my face, nothing terrible but again they weren't as bad while I was on BCP.

  • I did gain about 5lbs when I went off, but my biggest problem was the breakouts.  I can't remember having bad skin before I went on the pill, but I certainly had it when I came off!  It was horrible.  I don't recall any headaches, I didn't have any spotting issues, and my p still was only 3 days, which I was thankful for!  Mine was wacky though, varied between 30-40 days which drove me crazy.
  • I didn't notice any difference after stopping BCP. I did have bad headaches during second tri though.
  • Oh yes!  I forgot about the break outs.  The worse they have EVER been.  Even had to go to a Dermatologist.  Horrible.

  • I stopped BCP back in May after being on it for 9 years. I have gained about 5 pounds that I can't seem to lose. For about 2 months after I stopped, I had horrible headaches, but those have tapered off. My skin has become super oily and keeps breaking out since May, I am hoping my body will get used to being off the pill and start getting back to normal soon.

  • I went off BCP in Jan or Feb after being on it for about 12 years.  I haven't gained any weight since going off.  I very rarely had headaches when I was on the pill and still don't.  The only thing I noticed after going off was my skin breaking out more than normal for a couple months.  But I adjusted my skin routine a few times before I figured out what my skin needed now that I am off the hormones.
