Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

adapting to daycare

Hi everyone.

I was wondering how long it took your little one to adapt for daycare. My Charlotte is 16 months old and started tuesday. The three times(including this morning) leaving her there in the morning was fine, no crying, even happy to be there. I'm doing this gradually, a couple of hours tuesday am, the yesterday came to pick her up after lunch and she has been crying since 9h30 until I came. Did not want to eat a thing. Appenrently she starterd crying 2 hours after I left. Today I'm trying to leave her for lunch and nap time(don't think she will sleep. Took a hair appointment to change my mind off of it because I'm seriously freaking out here and just want to go and see if she is ok. I'm sure she wont want to eat again : (. I know I have to be strong and keep bringing her, I'm going back to work at the end of next week but it's hard, really hard.

Have you experienced that too and was it a long process? Thanks!

Re: adapting to daycare

  • My girls are 15 months old and started at a new daycare this week, so we are also on day 3.

day 1: Milina cried non-stop all morning long...stopping long enough to eat breakfast/lunch...cried again most of the afternoon...Ava cried on and off all day but stopped for meals & snacks and had a short nap

day 2: M cried on and off all day, A didn't cry at all...both napped.

day 3: I left M crying and A took off to play the minute I put her down.  Hopefully it got better.

My thoughts are it has to get better...the dcp told me some kids take a couple weeks...every day they seem to be doing better...it is heartbreaking tho to know your child is sobbing her heart out while you are away...but they will adjust...and so will we...GL and enjoy your hair appt...it will get better!

  • For DS it wasn't hard to adapt, because he started at 6 weeks old. So now that he is 14 months, he is used to the other children, environment and adults.

Good luck with Charlotte -- she will get used to it! She just is in a place that's not normal to her, but she will adjust when she gets to know the providers and the other kids. GL!

  • Thank you!

The lady called me at noon today to tell me she was crying since 8h30 this morning and if I could come back after my hair appointment. When I came back, she told me sha had stop crying 10 minutes after the phone call and she slept 2 hours this afternoon. She was a bit crying afterward but not as much. But all this time I was so stressed out thinking she was crying all day long!

I guess it will get better. But thank you for sharing your stories, it makes me feel like I'm not the only one living this!

  • Poor little girl :(

DS has been going to daycare since he was 3 mos old, but he has had mornings lately where he will cry as I'm handing him over to our sitter. It's heartbreaking for me, so I know it's especially hard on you knowing that she's crying for a good portion of the day. Just give her a little time, she'll get used to it. GL!

  • DS just started daycare for the first time in August ( he was 22 mths and had always stayed with my aunt while I worked. ) It took him about 3 weeks to get used to it. He still has a tough time on Mondays because of the weekend. Hopefully, your LO will get used to it soon!
