3rd Trimester

36 week appointment dilated to a 1 and cervix is soft!

Ok ladies! I had an appointment yesterday and the doctor did my first internal exam. I have been having some mild cramping and some downward pressue but nothing major.  When the doc examined me she said the babies head is down, my cervix is soft and I am dialated to a 1...

I am curious to know if any of you are in this situation and how long you have been at this stage.  Also if you are dialated more than this how long did it take you to get to where you are now.... I know it could be a few weeks still.

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Re: 36 week appointment dilated to a 1 and cervix is soft!

  • It has been 3 weeks since my 1st dilation announcement.

    At 33.5 weeks I was 1/2 cm and 50%

    At 35 weeks I was 1cm and 70%

    At 36 weeks I was 2cm and 70%

I am waiting patiently to see what the doctor says I am this week.

Everyone is different.  I had a friend that was 1/2cm at 37 weeks and stayed that way until 41 when we water broke (still 1/2cm) and they started her on pitocin.

  • As I'm sure you know, everyone is different . . .

That said, I was 1cm and 70% effaced at 36 weeks, "a little mroe than a fingertip" and 80% effaced at 37 weeks, and 2cm and 90% effaced at 38w4d.  My daughter was born less than 24 hours after that final appointment.

  • At my first internal at the hospital at 37 weeks I was 2 cm and 70% effaced, DD was born about 8 hours later.

I was wondering what does having a soft cervix mean exactly, I had to make a trip to L&D last week, the nurse checked me and said I was a fingertip dilated (does that even count?) and that my cervix is really soft.  I asked her if that was good or bad, since I'm not yet full term, I don't want to be going too early and she just said everyone is different.

I asked my doctor what that meant when he said I was 2cm.  He said "that means you are 2cm.  You could be back here tomorrow, you could still be coming to see me at 39 weeks.  There is no way to know."

  • I was 1cm at my 36w5d appointment and I was still 1cm at my 37w6d appointment yesterday.  I was disappointed....but I keep reminding myself that it doesn't really mean that much.

She did mention that the baby was high and her prognosis was "no baby this week".  Oh well :)

  • I've actually chosen not to get internal exams because they mean so little.  I feel like it just gets your hopes up for nothing...
  • 35 weeks - 1 cm

    36 weeks 1 cm

    37- weeks 1.5cm 65% effaced

    38 weeks 2 cm 65% effaced

39 weeks 1 cm 65%.... YES, I went BACKWARDS. Baby is currently at -3 station, and my cervix is WAAAAYYY far back still.

Next pregnancy, i will be refusing them. It got my hopes WAY up and I was so upset at my 39 week appt.

  • When I was PG with DS I was 1cm at 36 weeks, 2cm at 37 weeks and had him at 38 weeks with starting labor at 3cm.  So your not that far away Smile  GL and have a blessed delivery!

  • With DD:

    35 w: 1cm
    37w: 1cm
    39w: 1cm
    41w: 2cm
    41w3d: delivered.

    With DS:

    28w: 1cm
    30w: 1cm
    32w: 1cm
    34w: 1cm
(And it goes on like that folks, until 40weeks)
