S/O Cloth Diapering: When you say a specific brand didn't work for you, what do you mean?

I'm not trying to sound stupid in asking, but I'm curious.  Besides your LO having an allergy to a fabric, why would a diaper not work for you?  Is it the fit of the diaper and the size of your LO?  Is it absorbency issues?  What else?

I ask because I don't see how a diaper just won't work.  (Mind you, we haven't even tried yet so I don't know... but I want to know what possible issues could be when we start.)  We only have one brand of newborn cloth diapers to start with.  We got Happy Heiny's Newborn Pockets (they look great and we got our stash of 24 from 2 different Nesties).  I want them so badly to work for us but I get nervous hearing about certain brands just not working for people.

Please fill a girl in! :)

  • Some have a taller rise, so for short-torso'ed babies they would come up way too high to be comfortable. Some are too narrow or too wide through the crotch area to get a get leak-proof fit. Some fabrics/inserts aren't absorbent enough for heavy-wetters... there are lots of reasons. :) That's why some sites/businesses offer diaper trials to try out different brands before commiting/investing to one specific style.

  • When I say that, I mean it leaked pretty much every time, even if it looks like it fits well. (Most of mine are OS and I adjust them the best I can.) If all the diapers are leaking, I know I have a general repelling issue that can also be tricky to solve, but if it's a couple certain ones, I blame something about the diaper. Before I take it out of the rotation, I usually double stuff it next time and try again or plan to try it down the road when baby's bigger. For some reason my XS BG's were like this, but the OS ones are okay. Weird.

I would have liked to try more before buying, but the trial periods were too short that I didn't think I'd have enough time to sufficiently try everything, get them all cleaned, packed, and back to the store in time.

I'm sure your nb ones will work fine, but even if they don't you can sell them and try again with different ones. It helps that you bought them used so you didn't spend as much too.

Also, some people prefer certain closures to others. I love one kind (can't for the life of me remember what it is) b/c of the slim fit, but Jon can't do the hook closures due to his neuropathy- so we have to stick to snaps and velcro.
