Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When to introduce bottles?

My daughter is about 3 weeks old and has been exclusively BF. At her last doctors appointment one of the nurses mentioned that we shouldn't wait too long to introduce a bottle so she doesn't reject it when I go back to work (in Nov).

Since the baby was screaming her head off at the time, it didn't occur to me to ask what a good time to introduce a bottle is. So I'm hoping y'all can help me out with that. Do I just wait until BF is well established? H is staying home for a month after I go back to work and I don't want him to have to bring the baby to work so I can feed her (this happened to a coworker of mine).

TIA!

Re: When to introduce bottles?

  • We waited a month. I'm reading a blog of someone who waited 3 months, and her LO is not taking them.

  • I'm going back to work at 8 weeks and we introduced it at 5 weeks. She takes it okay but prefers the breast. I wouldn't do it earlier than 4 weeks so you can establish a good supply.
  • Around a month is what I was thinking. Thanks!

  • I did 4 weeks and he took it right away:) My husband gave him the first one...
  • Both my pedi and LC at the hospital suggested at 1 month.

  • My LO had a bottle at his 1 week apt (I was not comfortable NIP yet) he has not had very many of them and will not take them if he is upset about not being fed in a timely manner.  He has taken a paci since he was in the hospital and has had no problems going back and forth.
  • NOW! Or maybe in the next one-two weeks if she is BF well.

I am back to work just for my two week's notice thank god. And DD will not take a bottle. DH did just what you don't want to have happen, and brought her in to nurse today. I've been a basket case all week and don't know how we will get through next week. My boss' baby did the same thing when she returned and she found that a fast flow nipple fixed the problem even though she thought slow flow would have been better. So I'm going to try that. Even though I won't be at work my MIL is ready and waiting to watch DD for large chunks of time and I don't want to live my life is 2.5 hour segments! Good luck.
