Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What do you use for diaper rash?

Tegan's been having runny diapers for over a week and now she has an ear infection and the antibiotics are only making things worse. We're adding a probiotic to her formula and it's helping a tiny bit, but the poor baby has horrible diaper rash. At home, I've been letting her air out a couple times a day, giving her a longer bath every evening and wiping her with a washcloth instead of baby wipes.

I've been using a combination of Boudreaux's Butt Paste and regular Aquaphor, and that was working, but now it doesn't seem to be doing much good. What have you used for diaper rash?

  • I use Butt Cream. I have no idea what is the best, that is just what I got at my baby shower and have used since his birth. He has only had diaper rash three times and it seemed to do the trick.

  • Not sure if you have in the US, but Sudocrem. I love it.
  • I glop on the Desitin. And I make sure to apply liberally at every diaper change, not just the muddy ones.

I put Desitin on her tonight, before putting on her overnight diaper. I'm hoping that it'll work better than the other stuff I've been using. She's already so miserable with the ear infection and tummy stuff, that I hate to think she's hurting anywhere else.

  • Jumping back over from toddler-land... We're in the same boat, 12mo shots have left us in a poopy mess, and the higher % of zinc oxide in the diaper cream, the better. With that said, I stood in Target and read every container they had yesterday. My normal go-to had always been Triple Paste for a bad rash, but I wasn't seeing results this time, so after looking I got Desitin Maximum Strength Paste (purple container). It is 40% Zinc Oxide, where everything else was about 12% or 13%. We're not completely healed today, but I see a major improvement. Like pp said, I apply at EVERY change, not just poopy ones.
  • This may sound weird, but I use Mylanta then vaseline over that.  A nurse at the pedi's office suggested it for when he had a diaper rash from antibiotics.  She said it would be soothing.  It REALLY helped.  She said diaper rash creams can actually make it worse and burn.  Also, like you said I'll skip the wipes and just use water. He's on antibiotics right now actually, and that's what I'm using.
  • Bag balm!  I know it sounds crazy, but it works!  A co-worker swears by it and I tried it- sure enough! That's all I use now!

Another thing you can try (suggestion from my Dr.) is to pour a tsp. of Mylanta in the baby's diaper.  When they go potty, the Mylanta immediately takes the acidity out of the pee/poo which keeps it from irritating the skin until you change the diaper.

  • DD rarely ever gets rashes but when shes does I go back and forth between the purple Destin and butt Paste. Always seems to do the trick!
