When to start using plates and bowls?

When did your LOs start eating food off a plate or out of a bowl? We have always just put the food on his highchair thing (drawing a blank for the  name of that 'thing' right now).  Tonight he actually brought me a plate as I was putting his food out and I put it on the plate instead but the first thing he did was grab it and was about to throw it all over the place.  I scraped the food off of it but let him have the plate with him while he ate to maybe help him get adjusted to it?? When is normal to start plating his food and he won't throw it aross the room?

Re: When to start using plates and bowls?

  • We started with plates and bowls around 11 months (I think?!)

It was a while before he stopped throwing/dumping.  Now he'll eat the food without dumping it.  The minute he starts dumping, the plate goes away.

He only dumps when he's full though.  He's like his mama and doesn't like to waste his food. LOL.

  • We've been using plates since she was about 10 months. She has never been a real dumper.

  • DD never dumps her plate at school but always does at home, sigh...  Tonight the suction cup bowl failed me and she poured it all over herself.

  • We try periodically with the suction bowls. She'll tolerate it when she is starving, but dumps as soon as she eats enough to take the edge off. I just keep trying and figure someday it will loose it's allure. I probably should look to see if there are suction plates.
  • We started with plates and bowls around 10 months and spoons and forks soon after. He will on occasion dump everything off his plate onto his tray, but he hands me the plate shortly after.
  • I started using plates (just paper plates) when DD refused to sit in her high chair or booster and started eating at the table w/ us ~ 18/19 months.  She rarely dumps her food out.

  • We starting putting food on plates/bowls at 1 year.  That is also when I started giving him silverware to use.  He does really well until he's almost finished eating - then he dumps the rest of the food on his highchair tray and just likes to hold the plate.  I've been trying to teach him not to pick his plate up or throw food on the floor.
