Breastfeeding

What does TSA consider "reasonable amounts" of BM?

I am flying for the first time without LO this weekend. I will be away from her for 3 days. Typically I pump around 7 oz each feeding, 5 feedings a day. This would theoretically result in 105 oz for the weekend.

I was thinking that I can't bring all of it back, but I was going to try and bring back around 40 oz in bottles with an ice pack.

TSA states the following

"When traveling with your infant or toddler, in the absence of suspicious activity or items, greater than 3 ounces of baby formula, breast milk, or juice are permitted through the security checkpoint in reasonable quantities for the duration of your itinerary, if you perform the following:

  1. Separate these items from the liquids, gels, and aerosols in your quart-size and zip-top bag.
  2. Declare you have the items to one of our Security Officers at the security checkpoint.
  3. Present these items for additional inspection once reaching the X-ray. These items are subject to additional screening.

You are encouraged to travel with only as much formula, breast milk, or juice in your carry-on needed to reach your destination."

Has anyone flown with this much milk? Would you consider it excessive?

Thanks for the help.

  • I have traveled with 20oz and they never even questioned me.  I would ask when you are beginning your travel and going through security.  I know you might get a grumpy TSA person, but so far when regarding my pump (which gets searched EVERY time) and the breastmilk, they have been nice.  Explain the situation and see what they say.

  • I've flown with over 100 oz before without issues.  As soon as you say breastmilk they sort of leave you alone  Stick out tongue

  • I just flew without my baby last weekend and returned home after 3 days with a sizable quantity of BM in freezer bags (although not frozen), in my pump's cooler bag with an ice pack.  I packed in my checked bag, and actually put the cooler inside a plastic grocery bag in case it leaked at all, and when I got home, I could tell they hadn't touched the bag.  I have traveled with my kids with about 20-30 oz of BM in my carry on, and never had any issues.  I agree with pp that they usually don't bother with you if you say it's BM!
