Pregnant after a Loss

How many u/s?

How many u/s does your OB's office give you?  Would you "fake" symptoms to get another one?

I ask because my sister's friend had her big u/s and the baby had the legs crossed and she did not find out what they are having and she really wants to know.  She asked her OB if they would do another one and they said they dont do anymore.  She decided that next appt she will "fake" some symptoms to get another peak.

My office only gives us 2 (I had my 2nd one already) unless there are issues.  I would not be able to fake it.

Re: How many u/s?

  • We have had an ultrasound at every visit since we are having twins and are considered high risk.

Just because she fakes symptoms doesn't mean they will have her an ultrasound more than likely they will hook her up to the NST monitor and monitor her that way which takes about 20-30 minutes and it is boring as heck.  They would only do an ultrasound if they couldn't get what they needed from the NST which they almost always can.

  • i had my nt scan and then the big u/s (and a repeat one to get a better look at her heart).  i don't think i get another.  boo.
  • 2 officially - early and then the big u/s.  I'm high risk so I'll have more.

  • Since I've had a miscarriage, I got one at 6-7weeks, then they do one at 10 weeks and another at 20 weeks (big u/s) and Im not sure about at the end but I think they might do a growth one late but Im not positive.

(I've had more bc of spotting but I did not fake it)

Im kinda surprised they couldnt think of an excuse to get her another one.  My OB office was going to do that if we couldnt tell.  They couldnt see the lower spine bc Abby wouldnt cooperate so Im geting another and they joked about me having an excuse to get another one)

I dont think I could fake it, but I sure would ask multiple times for another one. I guess a last resort is a 4d one?

  • i forgot, i did have a spontaneous one (no photos for me) at L&D at 11 weeks after a spotting episode, and i also had an early one at 7 weeks with my RE.  that makes a total of 5, but i should have only had 3.
  • I get 2 - I already had one. I don't get another until 20 weeks. Luckily for me, my mom is an OB/L&D nurse and has access to u/s machines, so she can hook me up.

Even if I didn't have the option from my mom, I would not fake symptoms to get an u/s. That could never turn out well. Why doesn't she look up private u/s facilities in her area and pay to get another one done if she wants one?

  • Our insurance gives us unlimited u/s...

With that being said I have already had 2.. I go back on my 17th week to check for gender.  Then we have a mandatory 20 w.. After that I have no idea, probably whenever need be..

  • Normally I'd get 2 if I opted NOT to have the NT scan. Which is what we did with DD. We did get some elective u/s done because DD wasn't cooperating at the big u/s, but we paid for those out of pocket.

This time around I will have 4. ?We had one at 5 weeks and my OB said it was too early to date the pregnancy, I'm going back next week for another one. ?Then we have chosen to the NT scan because insurance covers it now. ?And then the big u/s.

  • Oh I forgot, I got one at the hospital the day DD was born to make sure she was in the right position. ?At that point I didn't care, I just wanted her out LOL.

  • I just had my 3rd yesterday.  My doctor never specified how many u/s.  I had one at 6w1d for a viability u/s because I was scared to death and I think that my doc felt bad for me.  I had another really quick u/s at 10 weeks because we couldn't hear the h/b via doppler.  My 3rd was the big u/s.  I am guessing that I won't have any more and I don't think that I could fake something just to have another.
  • I have no idea how many I am supposed to get...but I''ve already had 6!! One at 6 weeks, 9 weeks, NT scan, then at 12 and 16 because they couldn't find the hb on doppler and then the biggie at 20. I think I'm done though!!
  • Mine normally does two, but I got one really early also.  I asked yesterday and he said they will not do any more unless there is a medical reason and they need to look.  But they do elective 4d ones in the office that we can pay I think $100 for!
  • At my Dr back in NJ, I would get three. Who knows what I will get going to all these different Dr across the country!

  • I got 2. One to date the pregnancy and then the big u/s one. Maybe she could go to a 3d-4d place to get a gender check. I know they do them and it doesn't cost as much as the regular session.
  • I only get two as well.  But since my mom is an u/s tech, I'm going to sneak into her office when I am home for Christmas for an extra one.  It will be after "the big u/s" so if for some reason we don't know the sex at that time, mom will help us figure it out four weeks later.
  • The standard at my OBs office is 4: 7 weeks, 12 weeks, 20 weeks, and 30 weeks. I feel lucky for that, plus the fact that they gave me a few extra ones in the beginning for peace of mind. I'm not sure I'd be able to fake anything because I'm a horrible liar : )

  • Unless something is wrong and the doctor determines medical need for more, I'll get 2.  One was for dating purposes around 11w; the other is this Friday for the big u/s.
  • I've had three already.  1st making sure everything was where it was supposed to be.  2nd at 7 weeks and 3rd at 9 weeks.  I think at my next appt they are just using the doppler to my knowledge.
  • Your friend is ridiculous. That's why health insurance costs are through the roof.

  • I agree.  If there's no real medical reason for it then why should you get one just b/c she wants to know the sex. And frankly, lying about symptoms to get a test that she knows isn't necessary is insurance fraud.

  • My office typically does 1 at 20w, although I did get one at 8-9w due to some spotting and cramping. During my 20w u/s the tech told me that I might need another one in a few weeks to check on part of the placenta that is rather low, but that my DR would be the one to determine that.

Oh and NO on the faking, we want another one later on so we are paying for a 3d-4d one at a private place. $125 for 15min's and includes dvd and cd of pics.
