C-section Moms - lifting restrictions

Did you follow your lifting restrictions for your entire 5-6 weeks PP?

I am feeling really good, have been cleared to drive for a week, and really want to get out of the house with LO. But, I can't lift the car seat or the stroller out of my car since I was told not to lift anything heavier than LO. I'm trying to decide if I want to be bad and disregard these instructions.

  • I'm in the same boat as you.  I really really need to get out of this house.  I'm just hoping my Moby wrap comes in soon so when we do go places I don't need a stroller.  That way I can at least get out for a little while.

  • At 2 weeks, I was walking around and lifting DS and the carseat just fine. I didnt have any negative side effects from doing so. I didnt exactly walk around and hold the carseat through a store, but Id put it in the shopping cart or in the stroller and run my errands.

  • My OB told me to just take it slow when getting back to lifting anything over 10 lbs. Obviously if it's an emergency those rules are going to fly out the window. Her only instructions were no heavy lifting for the first 2 weeks, only when necessary for the following 2, then as I was comfortable with thereafter.

  • I was told not to lift over 10 lbs (or anything over baby's weight) for the first 2 weeks.

I pretty much disregarded that anyway since car seat plus baby was at least 16 lbs. I just made sure not to carry her far in the seat. So if I went to a store, I'd park next to the cart return, grab the cart, and then lift the carrier into it.

When I was feeling up to it, I started lifting DD1 again, and she's 41-42 lbs.

  • I didn't follow them.  I have a 44lb 2 y/o that wants to be held sometimes.  Now I did wait 2 weeks before lifting him.  But now I hold, carry, lift him all the time.  I was also driving after a week.  But my doc said as long as I felt fine than go ahead.

  • I didn't have a lifting restriction. I've heard "nothing over 10lbs" is generally the rule. My kid was born at 11lb, 2.5oz... maybe that's why they didn't restrict me? Stick out tongue

  • I've stuck to it. My DH and parents make sure I do. It sucks. At my 2 week appt, I asked if I could lift heavier things now. She said absolutely not. Glad my 6 wk appt is Monday.

  • The hospital told me not to lift anything heavier than the baby, too. I waited until it didn't feel like a strain. I carry him to and from the car in the seat now. Be careful though, I overdid it quick and ended up with a leak in my incision. NOT a good time.

  • I think I waited about 3 weeks to lift the car seat and stroller in/out of the car. I was by myself, and had no choice.

But I'm bad at following orders. I went back to work training horses 3 weeks after my first c-section.

  • I was told 'Nothing heavier than the baby' although my OB laughed about it, given how huge she was when she was born.

Honestly, after about 2 weeks I was lifting things and doing laundry. I did go to the grocery store by myself and lifted a bit too much at 2-3 weeks and felt it, but I'm pretty fine now.

Of course, I'm terrible about doctor's orders. My husband asked my OB if he should tie me to the couch when I was on modified bedrest because I have so much trouble sitting still!

  • My doctors didn't give me any specific instructions.  They believe your body will be your guide.  I was carrying LO in the carseat after about 3-4 weeks and taking her out in the stroller (and getting it out of the car) around 5-6 weeks.  I had a complicated c-sec and recovery too, but I could tell when I was ready.
  • I wasn't really given any lifting restrictions this time around. My hospital discharge papers just stated pelvic rest and no driving for 4 weeks. I started driving after 2 1/2 weeks b/c I knew most orders were for driving after 2. I followed the pelvic rest though. I refuse to lift Kylah in the carseat though. It seems like our seat is heavier than most. I've just left the carseat attached to the base in the car I drive the most and when it's time to get out, I put her in the sling and wear her.

  • I remember going shopping at 2 weeks and lifting DD in her car seat base.  I was also lifting DS (37 lbs) at 6 weeks.

Just go slow.  You'll know if it's too much weight.

  • Hey, I didn't follow it exactly and my recovery was a lot longer. In fact, my incision STILL hurts!
  • My OB said nothing over 10 lbs but I asked about carrying DS in his car seat and he said as long as that was the only lifting I did over 10 lbs and it was only occasional it shouldn't be a problem.
